Newsmakers & Top Headlines of the Year A lot has happened in 2010. Nationally, The BP petroleum company had the biggest oil spill yet in the Gulf of Mexico, infuriating the nation as a whole. Healthcare reform was passed expanding coverage for Americans, and Republicans took the House from Democrats after sweeping elections across the nation, buoyed by support from the Tea Party movement. Macon County had its share of activity this year as well. It saw the construction of a Veteran’s Memorial, the demolition of the Dillsboro Dam, the elections of new politicians and the humanitarian deeds of people coming together locally. The Macon County News has prepared a review of such events for its readers as it has for more than a quarter-century, and that tradition continues. |
