The 4th of July Horseshoe Tournament is held in a shady area of the Macon County Veterans Memorial Recreation Park near the Tennessee River. Register for the horseshoe tournament and the cornhole tournament at The Franklin Area Chamber of Commerce. Call (828)524-3161 for details.Registration is open for the Annual 4th of July Horseshoe and Cornhole Tournaments presented by the Franklin Chamber of Commerce on Monday, July 4. The Horseshoe Tournament will kick off Monday’s Annual 4th of July “Fireworks in the Park” festivities at the Macon County Veterans Memorial Recreation Park, just south of town on U.S. Highway 441.

The Horseshoe Tournament will begin at 10 a.m. and is open to “pitchers” of all ages, both men and ladies. Registration will open at 9:30 a.m. the day of the tournament next to the horseshoe pits. Registration fee is $25 per team. Pre-registration is now available at the Franklin Chamber of Commerce.

The tournament follows a double elimination format and played in sets of three games. Winners are determined by the best two of three in each set. Winners remain in the Winner’s Bracket and losers move to the Loser’s Bracket where it is very possible for a team in the Losers Bracket to win the tournament in the end. Each year teams from Western North Carolina and North Georgia try to win their portion of the prize purse totaling $350. First Place is awarded $200, second place earns $100 while third place wins $50. The horseshoe pits are in a shady area along the banks of the Cartoogechaye Creek, behind the Community Building.

The Cornhole Tournament will be held later that day at 3 p.m. The game of cornhole is quickly becoming a popular pastime. Cornhole is basically a “bean bag” game. Cornhole is a lawn game in which players take turns throwing bags filled with corn at a raised platform with a hole in the far end. A corn bag in the hole scores three points, while one on the platform scores one point. Play continues until a player reaches or exceeds the score of 21. The tournament will be comprised of two-player teams with double elimination brackets.

The Cornhole Tournament will be played on the baseball field in the middle of the recreation park just below the pool. Registration will be accepted beginning at 2 p.m. at the Chamber Booth in front of the ball field the day of the tournament. Players can register for both the cornhole and/or horseshoe tournament at the Franklin Chamber of Commerce anytime before Monday, July 4. Registration fee for the Cornhole Tournament is $25. A total purse of $300 will be awarded with $200 going to the first place team and $100 awarded to second place.
