Franklin will be hopping with all things BBQ when the 3rd Annual Mountain High BBQ Festival and Car Show comes to town Aug. 12 and 13 at the Wayne Proffitt Agricultural Center located on Highway 441 South. This two-day event is a Kansas City BBQ Society (KCBS) sanctioned festival. BBQ teams from all over the country will cook Friday and Saturday preparing their best BBQ, hoping to be named Grand Champion earning a N.C. State Championship.
Saturday will feature the KCBS Professional and Backyard Competitions and Franklin’s own “Tastin’ Tent.” If you want to taste what the judges taste, the “Tastin’ Tent” is where you’ll want to be. Your ticket will get you 10, two-ounce cups of BBQ pork from 10 different teams. The entries will be judged by you, tallied and crowned “Franklin’s Finest.” Tickets are limited and on sale at the Franklin Chamber of Commerce for only $5 with paid festival admission. The “Tastin’ Tent” will be open and ready for business on Saturday at 3 p.m. The Award Ceremony for the BBQ Competition is on Saturday at 5 p.m.
In addition to the tasty BBQ and festival foods for purchase, crafts and retail vendors, a couple of new attractions have been added to this year’s festival, a car show, Natural Beauty Pageant and a cornhole tournament.
The car show is being organized by Koss Motor Sports. Everyone is invited to enter their car. All car classes are invited. Registration forms can be found on the BBQ’s website at www.MountainHighBBQFestival.com. Click on the link on the home page. Everyone entered will receive a trophy with Grand Champion going to the top points earner. The majority of cars will be on the grounds Saturday, Aug. 13. Come out and see cars from antiques and classics to late models with hydraulic lifts.
A Natural Beauty Pageant is new to the Mountain High BBQ Festival this year in association with “The Glass Slipper Natural Beauty Pageant.” This pageant is for girls ages birth to 16 years old and will be held on Saturday, Aug. 13, at 1 p.m. The attire for this pageant is a casual country/western look. Every contestant will be recognized on stage and will receive a trophy. “Miss Mountain High BBQ Festival” will receive a sash, crown, two-foot trophy and fabulous title. Eight age groups will compete. Entry forms for the pageant can be found on the BBQ website at www.MountainHigh BBQFestival.com or can be picked up at the Franklin Chamber of Commerce.
A cornhole tournament has been added to this year’s festival as well. Cornhole is a lawn game played with bags filled with corn. The object is to toss the bags into a 6” hole cut in a 2’x 4’ platform 30’ away. This game is drawing a huge following at events like tail gate parties, NASCAR events, and pro baseball and football games. The tournament will be held on Saturday, Aug. 13 beginning at 11 a.m. Registration forms are available at the Franklin Chamber of Commerce until Aug. 12. Pre-registration is requested. Late registration will be open from 10 until 10:30 a.m. the morning of the tournament at the entrance gate for an additional $5 ($30 total). Prize money will be $200 for first place, $100 for second place and $50 for third place. This is a doubles tournament with double elimination play and random seed.
Also featured will be the music of the Dallas Reese Band who has entertained crowds throughout the southeast with classic rock.
