Starting on Sept. 2, City Lights Café in Sylva will display a 9/11 Memorial Exhibit containing replica banners sent by school children to the volunteers, police, firefighters and EMS at Ground Zero In New York City. The banners are on permanent display in St. Paul’s Church (home church of Pres. George Washington) which served as the triage and rest area during the early days of rescue and recovery efforts.
Rick "Sharky" Gorton was the only photographer given permission to record these banners. He has partnered with the Jackson County Arts Council and Gallery 1 to bring this Commemorative Exhibit to Sylva.
All are invited to attend the opening beginning on Sept. 2, from 6 to 9 p.m. for Sylva After Dark for the unveiling and to meet the artist. Laura Lee Goebels will present a quilt to be hung on Sept. 11, produced from these replica banners in order for it to travel throughout the nation representing Jackson County.
Drink specials and complimentary light appetizers will be provided.
