The mountain rock band Cullowhee, named for the community where its sound was born, will reunite for a concert at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, in the Grandroom of A.K. Hinds University Center.
The band was formed in the 1970s as a folk trio and evolved into a six-man mountain rock band featuring former WCU students Terry Edwards, Mike Clark, Sandy Flynn and Thom Jenkins, as well as Fred “Rick” Hubbard and Woody Jenkins.
Members wrote and performed music around the world including “Bring Back the Magic,” “Old Man of Sylva” and “Peace on the Mountain.” Flynn said the group chose the name Cullowhee because they were proud of their home.
Cullowhee last toured in 1984, and the Sept. 17 event will be the group’s fourth reunion concert at WCU to benefit the Cullowhee Revitalization Endeavour, a nonprofit organization working to help revitalize the community along Old Cullowhee Road.
“The Cullowhee band concerts have been well-attended events for the last three years, where old friends and alums reconnect,” said Mary Jean Herzog, CuRvE co-chair and professor in the School of Teaching and Learning. “They enthusiastically endorse a vibrant downtown in Cullowhee, like it was when they were students at WCU, when there were 35 active businesses along Old Cullowhee Road. They say there was so much to do that they didn’t go home on the weekends. The band appeals to old and young alike and the concert promises a rocking, rollicking good time.”
Tickets are $30 for reserved seats and $20 for general admission seating, and can be purchased online at www.wcu.edu/29440.asp. Proceeds from the concert will be used toward beautification projects facilitated by CuRvE, a grassroots community organization started in 2007. The group has organized events such as road and river clean-ups, landscaping and beautification, and has partnered with the Cullowhee Rotary Club, and WCU’s Honors College and Center for Service Learning. A subcommittee of CuRvE has developed plans for a river park, which is posted under “photos” on the group’s website, www.gocullowhee.org.
