Arts & Entertainment Macon County Fair 2012 Best Cake Contest winner

Bill Thrasher and his winning Carrot Cake.Bill Thrasher's Carrot Cake was selected as the Grand Champion of the 2012 Macon County Best Cake Contest, held at the Macon County Fair on Saturday, Sept. 15. Seventeen cakes were entered with original recipes. Each entry was viewed and judged individually before they were cut. Then each cake was uncovered and presented to the four judges to view along with a copy of the original recipe. A slice of each entry was cut and divided for each judge to smell and taste. All entries were judged on overall appearance, inside characteristics, flavor, and recipe originality.

This year’s judges were Chris Hedden, April Cocke, Brian Hedden and Gary Taylor. Gloria Thun announced that the winner of the 2012 Best Cake in Macon County was the Carrot Cake baked by Bill Thrasher. He also won last year with his German Chocolate Cake. This was the first time that the same baker has won two years in a row.

After photos were taken, all of the cakes were auctioned beginning with the Grand Champion, which sold for $300. The total of the cake auction was $1500, which was donated to the Macon County Fair. The cake committee, Brenda Perteet, Heather Wittekind and Gloria Thun expressed appreciation to everyone involved that made the 2012 Best Cake Contest and the 2012 Macon County Fair a success.
