Arts & Entertainment Hiking through History program at Macon library

Leanna JoynerThursdays at the Library presents “Hiking Through History” with Leanna Joyner on Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. in the Meeting Room of the Macon County Public Library.

Joyner has compiled and written a guide exploring the Underground Railroad and Civil War sites along the Appalachian Trail called “Hiking Through History: Civil War Sites on the Appalachian Trail.”

Spanning Pennsylvania to North Carolina, the guide details specific battles and skirmishes of the Civil War that intersect the Trail, paths of attack and lines of retreat that crisscross the Trail, and hikes that offer a bird’s eye perspective of the armies’ lines of movement.

A cemetary along the Appalachian Trail in Hot Springs, Madison County, N.C.The guide examines the significance of the presentday Appalachian Trail to freedom seekers along mountainous Underground Railroad routes and some stops that now coincide as rest stops for weary A.T. hikers.
