Arts & Entertainment Simone Weil documentary to be shown Oct. 9 at WCU

Filmmaker Julia HaslettThe documentary film “An Encounter with Simone Weil,” the story of a French philosopher, activist and mystic of the 1930s, will show at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, in the theater of A.K. Hinds University Center at Western Carolina University.

The screening is free and open to the public. Refreshments and a question-andanswer session with the filmmaker, Julia Haslett, will follow.

“An Encounter with Simone Weil” is part of the Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers, which provides communities across the South access to smaller films and opportunities to join film directors in discussion. WCU’s Arts and Cultural Events series, or ACE, sponsors the tour’s stop at WCU.

Haslett interweaves her own personal struggles, including a father who committed suicide, in the film about a tireless advocate for the poor and unemployed. The film ultimately is an exploration of moral responsibility and living life with compassion.

Next up in the series is “Bag It,” a documentary investigation into plastic and its effect on the environment and people, showing Tuesday, Nov. 13.

The goal of ACE is to bring high-quality, entertaining, thought-provoking arts and cultural events to the WCU campus. For more information about the Southern Circuit film series or other ACE offerings, contact Lori Davis, assistant director for campus activities, at 828-227-3622 or email ledavis.wcu.edu.
