Arts & Entertainment WCU presents ‘Once in a Lifetime’ Nov. 8-10

Stage and screen students (from left) Jordan Snead, Amanda Wilson and Michael Gallagher will appear Nov. 8-10 in ‘Once in a Lifetime,’ a satiric look at Hollywood and part of the Western Carolina University Mainstage Series.“Once in a Lifetime,” a satiric look back at the Golden Age of Hollywood and the birth of the “talkies,” will stage at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, through Saturday, Nov. 10, at the John W. Bardo Fine and Performing Arts Center at Western Carolina University.

Part of the Mainstage Series from WCU’s School of Stage and Screen, “Once in a Lifetime” was written by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman and tells the comedic story of three members of a failing vaudeville act who head to Hollywood to cash in on the conversion to “talkies” by posing as elocutionists, attempting to teach silent stars to speak on camera.

Claire Eye, a stage and screen faculty member, will direct, and stage and screen students comprise the cast. In addition, motion picture and television production students are creating a short film to open the play and the School of Music is designing music and sound for the production. “I’m very grateful that so many people were willing to help us put this show together, and I know it’s going to result in a wonderful evening of funny, witty theatre,” Eye said.

Next on the Mainstage schedule is “Rashomon,” a stark examination of the limits of human perception and the human need for certainty and its elusive nature, to stage Feb. 20-23 in WCU’s Hoey Auditorium.

Tickets for “Once in a Lifetime” cost $15 for adults; $10 for seniors and WCU faculty and staff; and $10 for students (or $7 in advance). Tickets are available online at bardoartscenter.wcu.edu or by calling the box office at 828-227-2479.
