The Western Carolina Community Chorus, under the direction of Robert Holquist, will present a concert on Sunday, April 14, at 4 p.m. in the sanctuary of the Sylva First Baptist Church. The music of John Rutter (b. 1945) will be performed, including “Requiem,” “All Things Bright and Beautiful,” “For the Beauty of the Earth,” “Look to the Day,” and “The Lord Bless You and Keep You.” A group of six wind and percussion instruments will accompany the “Requiem” along with Lorie Meservey, organist.
The soprano soloist for “Requiem” will be Susan Belcher of Cullowhee. Barbara Dooley will accompany the smaller works on piano, She has served as the accompanist for this ensemble since their formation in 1970.
The ensemble numbers 65 voices this spring, and have been preparing the concert since January.
"The music of John Rutter is appealing to both the performers and members of the audience," Holquist said. The Community Chorus is supported by Western Carolina University, the NC Arts Council, and the Jackson County Arts Council. The program is free and open to the public. Note the site of the presentation (669 West Main Street, Sylva). The chorus typically performs on the WCU campus, but the nature of the program and the organ accompaniment determined the change of venue.
