Arts & Entertainment Registration open for horseshoe and cornhole tournaments

Prizes for first, second, and third place totaling $350 will be handed out at the annual cornhole tournament at the Franklin Chamber’s Fourth of July Fun Day at the county rec park. The Annual 4th of July Horseshoe and Cornhole Tournaments will be presented by the Franklin Chamber of Commerce on Thursday, July 4. The Horseshoe Tournament will kick off Thursday’s Annual 4th of July Fireworks in the Park at the Macon County Veterans Memorial Recreation Park, just south of town on U.S. Highway 441.

The Horseshoe Tournament will begin at 10 a.m. and is open to “pitchers” of all ages, both men and women. Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. the day of the tournament and is also available at the Franklin Chamber of Commerce any time before July 4. The tournament follows a double elimination format and is played in sets of three games. Winners are determined by the best two of three in each set. Winners remain in the Winner’s Bracket and losers move to the Loser’s Bracket. Of course, it is possible for a team in the Losers Bracket to win the tournament in the end. Each year teams from Western North Carolina and North Georgia try to win their portion of the prize purse totaling $350. The horseshoe pits are in a shady area along the banks of the Cartoogechaye Creek.

The Cornhole Tournament, sponsored by ServPro, will be held later that day at 3 p.m. Folks may play in both tournaments.

Cornhole is basically a “bean bag” game. Cornhole is a lawn game in which players take turns throwing bags filled with corn at a raised platform with a hole in the far end. A corn bag in the hole scores three points, while one on the platform scores one point. Play continues until a player reaches or exceeds the score of 21. The tournament will be comprised of two-player teams with double elimination brackets. The Cornhole Tournament will be played on the baseball field in the middle of the recreation park just below the pool. Registration will be held on the field from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Registration is also being accepted at the Franklin Chamber of Commerce any time before Thursday, July 4.

Registration for either tournament is $25 per team. A total purse of $350 will be awarded for each tournament — $200 going to the first place teams, $100 to second place teams and $50 to both third place teams.
