Arts & Entertainment ‘Kiss Me, Kate’ staged March 24-27 at WCU

Western Carolina University students Casey Weems and Patrick Detloff star in the classic musical ‘Kiss Me, Kate,’ playing March 24-27 at WCU’s Fine and Performing Arts Center.CULLOWHEE – Western Carolina University musical theater students will present Cole Porter’s classic musical “Kiss Me, Kate” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday- Saturday, March 24-26, and at 3 p.m., Sunday, March 27, in the Fine and Performing Arts Center.

The play chronicles the complicated relationships on and off the stage of a group of theater actors as they prepare a production of Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew.” Musical numbers punctuate the proceedings, including the songs “So In Love,” “Too Darn Hot” and “Brush Up Your Shakespeare.” The show stars WCU students Patrick Detloff, Casey Weems, Amanda Kouri, Joe Callahan, Peter O’Neal, Jonathan Cobrda, Tyler McKenzie, Tommy Cooley, David Haines and Cameron Feuerhelm, among others.

Director Terrence Mann, WCU Distinguished Professor of Musical Theatre, brings his firsthand knowledge of the stage to this production. Mann has been nominated for three Tony Awards and is best known for originating the role of the Beast in the Broadway production of “Beauty and the Beast.” He joined the WCU faculty in 2006 while continuing his decades-long career in stage, film and television.
