The Franklin Chamber of Commerce has announced entry forms are now available for the 2013 Christmas Parade. The parade is scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 1 beginning at 3 p.m. A tradition falling on the Sunday after Thanksgiving, this year’s parade is sure to delight all of those that attend.
“A Picture Perfect Christmas” has been chosen as the theme of the parade.
“This year’s theme provides for a broad range of ideas to be incorporated in float design and other entries. We encourage those participating to decorate their float featuring the “Picture Perfect” theme said Cindy Cavender, Special Events Coordinator.
Prize money will be awarded. Judging of the floats will begin at 2 p.m. Prizes for Best Use of Theme, Most Creative & Grand Champion will be awarded.
The Franklin Chamber invites the public to participate in a food drive collecting canned goods and non-perishable items to be donated to CareNet.
“The demand has definitely increased due to the continued unemployment rate,” said Sandra Queen with CareNet. Chamber board members and staff will push shopping carts along the parade route.
This year’s Grand Marshal is Jack Horton. Horton recently announced his retirement as county manager. Horton has worked on behalf of Macon County to make our hometown a better place to live, work and play. He will stay busy after retirement spending time with friends and family, delving more deeply into his faith and tinkering in his workshop repairing his 35-year-old pickup truck. Jack and his wife, Lydia, are patiently awaiting their third grandchild to arrive in November.
The parade will follow the same route as last year, lining up behind Outdoor 76 and First Baptist Church and along Church Street. The parade route will begin by pulling out on the top of Town Hill beside Town Hall. The route will proceed down Main Street turning left at the Old Town Hall Building onto Porter Street. Then turn left onto Palmer Street and continue to Highlands Road. Each entry can choose their own location to disband.
“Folks need to keep in mind when designing their entries that the “Santa” rule applies again this year,” Cavender said. “No Santas are allowed on any float other than the traditional Santa float, which signifies the end of the parade.”
Businesses wishing to purchase the use of a commercial float may do so again this year at a cost of $500.
“These floats are perfect for any business that doesn’t have the time to put together an entry and wants to use a professionally-designed float in the parade” said Cavender. Interested businesses can contact the Franklin Chamber of Commerce by calling (828)524-3161.
Due to safety concerns, ATVs and motorcycles will not be permitted in the parade. In addition, the Parade Committee asks that no candy be thrown from the floats. Candy may be handed out by folks walking beside their floats. The Parade Committee reserves the right to remove any entry it deems inappropriate.
Entry forms can be picked up at the Chamber office located at 425 Porter Street. Entry fees are $25 for all entries.
