Arts & Entertainment WCU to screen ‘Girl Rising’ on April 1

“Girl Rising,” a feature film inspired by the true stories of nine girls from nine countries, will be screened at Western Carolina University on the lawn of A.K. Hinds University Center at 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 1.

Narrated by movie stars including Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway and Selena Gomez, “Girl Rising” was created to convey the importance of investing in the futures of female children and ways to end violence and support global change as it relates to global poverty, class and gender.

A brief presentation centered on how to get involved in the movement to empower women and girls will follow the screening. In case of inclement weather, the film will be shown in the University Center Multipurpose Room.

The event, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Department of Intercultural Affairs and the Department of Philosophy and Religion.

The screening was originally scheduled to be held in February but was postponed as a result of winter weather.
