Sylva’s free summer music series – Concerts on the Creek – returns for its third season in 2011 with performances every Friday evening from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend.
The outdoor shows take place from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Fridays at the Bridge Park Pavilion beside Scott Creek in downtown Sylva.
This year’s lineup is the strongest yet, with a heavy concentration of local and regional mountain music. Concert-goers will hear some of the best bluegrass, newgrass, rockabilly and traditional country sounds in Western North Carolina.
Rye Holler Boys, a youthful bluegrass quartet, kicks off the series May 27, while another adolescent group – Mountain Faith Youth Jam – concludes the season on Sept. 2.
Other bands of note include: Buchanan Boys (June 10), Josh Fields Band (July 22), The Freight Hoppers (July 29), Balsam Range (Aug. 5) and Big House Radio (Aug. 12).
The concerts are produced by the Town of Sylva, Jackson Co. Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Sylva Association, Jackson County Parks & Rec, and Jackson County Travel & Tourism.
“The Bridge Park Pavilion provides a great setting for live music and people have really embraced outdoor summer performances,” says Julie Spiro, executive director of the Jackson Chamber. “Concerts will start 30 minutes later this year to give folks more time to dine out and shop before coming to the park, setting up lawn chairs or blankets, and enjoying the shows.”
