Jackson County native Matt Stillwell will be returning to the region August 19-20 to host the 4th annual Shinefest at Fontana Village Resort for what he said is “going to be a great one this year for sure.”

Shinefest started in 2008 and was created around the filming of Stillwell’s music video, “Shine.” According to Stillwell, there is something special about having no cell phone service and enjoying the beauty within the national park which surrounds Fontana Village Resort. Shinefest allows guests to enjoy the area and to interact with the songwriters and artists who all come out to enjoy “one big party.”

Franklin will be hopping with all things BBQ when the 3rd Annual Mountain High BBQ Festival and Car Show comes to town Aug. 12 and 13 at the Wayne Proffitt Agricultural Center located on Highway 441 South. This two-day event is a Kansas City BBQ Society (KCBS) sanctioned festival. BBQ teams from all over the country will cook Friday and Saturday preparing their best BBQ, hoping to be named Grand Champion earning a N.C. State Championship.

Balsam Range, one of the most sought-after bluegrass bands in the Southeast, will play Sylva’s Concerts on the Creek series on Friday, Aug. 5.

Members of the popular fivepiece band hail from Haywood and Jackson counties. Since forming in 2007, Balsam Range has produced three critically-acclaimed CDs and was nominated for emerging artist of the year by the International Bluegrass Music Association in 2010.
