The Jackson County Public Library in Sylva will host a free concert by local guitarist Pete Friedman on Thursday, Aug. 9, at 7 p.m. in the Community Room.

Friedman, who lives in Whittier, is a guitarist known for his unique fingerpicking style. He is also a composer, teacher and musicians’ mentor who has for the past 11 years been accompanist at Whittier United Methodist Church. From 1966 to 1972, he played lead guitar in “The Second Foundation,” an underground band in New York City. He has also backed singer-songwriter Kath Bloom and many others.

Rabun County resident Wayne Jones, known to many audiences as Wayne “Rhythm Chef” Jones — a novelty percussionist with a contagious smile, has set a new world record: Most Palm-Flips With Spoons in 30 Seconds.

Sanctioned by Record Setters—a relatively new organization that is in many ways winning its fierce competition with Guinness World Records—Jones's world record effectively authenticates him as a top world-class spoons performer. The palm-flip is arguably the most visually fascinating of all spoons rudiments, and Jones's level of mastery of palm-flips is without equal, which explains the interests of the talent coordinator and producer for the Tonight Show with Jay Leno who flew Jones to Los Angeles to tape a talent segment known as Meal Or No-Meal, which aired Friday, June 15.

Bill Ledford sings an old timey tune that was originally recorded in 1955 with The Les Waldroop band.

Waldroop was on the stage at Carson Community Building this past Saturday night singing along with Steve Waldroop and the Heartland Band.

Everyone is invited every Saturday night between 7 and 9 p.m.

No admission is charged, just come on out and enjoy some great mountain music and clap a lot.

Natalie Grant, an award-winning singer/songwriter of contemporary Christian music, will be in concert Saturday, Aug. 4, at the Smoky Mountain Center for the Performing Arts. Showtime is set for 7:30 p.m and tickets start at $10.

Grant has received the Gospel Music Association’s Dove Award for Female Vocalist of the Year four consecutive years, 2006-2009, and again in 2012. She was also nominated for a Grammy Award in 2012 for Best Gospel/Contemporary Christian Music Performance for “Alive.”
