The Gibson Brothers, a traditional bluegrass band, will perform at the Smoky Mountain Center for the Performing Arts on Friday, July 20, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 each. Having received multiple awards for their talents, the Gibson Brothers are widely recognized as the finest brother duet in bluegrass music today. Eric and Leigh Gibson are accompanied by a phenomenal band – Mark Barber on bass, Clayton Campbell on fiddle, and Joe Walsh on mandolin. At the 2011 IBMA Awards, the Gibson Brothers were recognized as Vocal Group of the Year, and their album, “Help My Brother,” was named Album of the Year. “Help My Brother” was also named the 2012 SPGMA Album of the year, with the title track awarded Song of the Year.

The Macon County Veterans Memorial Park was hopping with thousands of folks on the 4th of July celebrating our nation’s independence with great entertainment, fun games and tasty food.

The Franklin Chamber of Commerce wants to thank all those who participated in the games throughout the day. The horseshoe tournament began at 10 a.m. with 21 teams competing. After a well fought competition, Shannon Teasley and Jeff Floyd took first place and were awarded $200. John Perry Samson and Eddie Lossi won second place with a payout of $100 while Jimmy Johnson and Dewey Ridley won third place and took home $50.

Joy Sparrow, a descendant of George Atmore Sparrow and Thomas Sparrow III, and editor of “Sparrow’s Nest of Letters,” a biographical account of the Sparrow family through diaries, letters, and other written materials, will appear in period dress and read from her book on Friday, July 20, 6:30 p.m., in the historic Chapel of First Presbyterian Church, 26 Church Street, Franklin. Ms. Sparrow will also be available to sign copies of “Sparrow’s Nest of Letters” at Friday’s event, and from 9 a.m. to 4 pm, July 21, at the Macon County Museum, during the Folk Festival.
