Bob Dalsemer, Music & Dance Coordinator at the John C. Campbell Folk School since 1991, has been awarded the high honor of Lifetime Contribution Award from Country Dance and Song Society at an awards ceremony Saturday, Dec. 10. A dance caller and musician for over 40 years, Dalsemer’s distinguished contributions to the world of folk dance and music include co-founding the Baltimore Folk Music Society, serving as Country Dance and Song Society president from 1990-1996, authoring West Virginia Square Dances, and calling and teaching dances nationally and internationally. Dalsemer is a well-known caller of traditional American contra, square, and circle dances and has composed many original dances. Also a talented musician, Dalsemer deftly plays accordion, fiddle, guitar, and mandolin. He is part of the band for the Folk School Morris and Garland Dancers, and a member of the Dog Branch Cats band.

Ricky Skaggs, The White Family, and their children will make a stop at the Smoky Mountain Center for the Performing Arts during their “A Skaggs Family Christmas” tour. They’ll perform both traditional and contemporary Christmas favorites filled with beautiful instrumental work and outstanding harmonies. Join them Saturday, Dec. 17, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $35 each.

Ricky Skaggs is no stranger to great country and bluegrass music. He’s a 14-time Grammy award winner. He has performed alongside great artists such as Emmylou Harris, the late Keith Whitley, Dolly Parton, and Travis Tritt, to name a few.


The Overlook Theatre Company opened “Disney’s Aladdin” last Tuesday and will hold the final show Thursday night at the Smoky Mountain Center for the Performing Arts.

The play features Princess Jasmine and a street urchin brought together by a big blue genie, with the evil Jafar mixing things up.

Talking parrots, chirping monkeys and flying rugs make this a most magical musical event.
