Farewell to a true American Hero

“A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.” – Christopher Reeve

For six years Army Sgt. Nathan "Nat" Henry was held as a prisoner of war in Vietnam. Despite the unfathomable circumstances in which Henry was held captive, each day he persevered and never gave up hope and faith that one day he would return to his home in Macon County, and be reunited with his family who never doubted his strength and courage during the war.

It wasn't the six years Henry spent as a prisoner of war that made him a hero. It wasn't the two Purple Hearts that he earned, or the two Silver Stars, or the two Bronze Stars, all diligently given to Henry for his service in the military. And if you ever had the pleasure of talking to Henry, he would consider himself a lot of things, but a hero wasn't one of them. What made Henry a hero was the relentless selfless sacrifice for his country and his community that he exhibited up until his final days.

2015 Year in Review: Part II

Macon County News has compiled some of the top stories of 2015. This year has been one of growth and change. From a new brewery and upscale restaurant uptown, to a brand new recreation park with the goal of increasing visitors to the area, Franklin is experiencing a “growth spurt.”

Following is Part II of the Year in Review.

Annual ‘Cold for a Cause’ focuses on awareness

Braving single digit temperatures, Macon County resident Patrick Jenkins spent last weekend in a bucket extended above the Highlands Road by a crane provided by Sanders Crane. In its seventh year, the annual Cold for a Cause event was intended to raise awareness about the needs of the community and to collect donations for Macon County Care Network.

"This year’s event was nothing short of another successful year," said Jenkins. "As I have said many times before, the people of Macon County are the ones to be commended for their efforts in bringing all the donated items to the event. If the public did not support this event, then … I would just be a guy sitting in a crane for 48 hours with nothing to donate. Therefore, I want to humbly thank everyone who donated items."

Georgia man’s body recovered from Dry Falls

Dozens work in rescue efforts over the weekend.

Rescue crews recovered the body of a 45-year-old Sean Kasey on Sunday after 24 hours of searching the freezing waters of the Cullasaja River this past weekend.

Officials said Kasey appeared to have fallen from a walkway near Dry Falls into the river. His body was found around 1:30 p.m Sunday.

"This was a very difficult rescue situation with extremely dangerous conditions in very unfavorable weather conditions," said Macon County Emergency Director Warren Cabe. "All the emergency workers there did an excellent job managing the situation."
