Hayes Richard RamseyHayes Richard Ramsey

Hayes Richard Ramsey, 60, of Andrews, N.C., died Saturday, July 14, 2012. He was a native of Buncombe County, but grew up in Cherokee County. He lived 25 years in Northwest Georgia before moving back to Cherokee County in 2001. He was a graduate of Western Carolina University and received his master’s degree from the University of West Georgia. He taught biology for most of 25 years. He was a member of Andrews United Methodist Church and helped deliver homebound meals through Meals on Wheels.

He was the son of the late R.W.H. Ramsey and Blanche Robertson Ramsey Piercy.

Surviving are a son, Michael David Ramsey and wife, Megan of Atlanta, Ga.; a brother, Tom Ramsey and wife, Shirley of Andrews; two nieces, Kellie Burton and husband, Andy of Marble, and Kaycee Cashion and husband, Justin of Franklin, N.C.; and best friend, George Morgan of Andrews.

A memorial service was held Wednesday, July 18, in the Andrews United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mike Macdonald officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in memory of Hayes Richard Ramsey to the Andrews United Methodist Church Meals on Wheels, PO Box 1300, Andrews, NC 28901.

Ruby Baldwin CanslerRuby Baldwin Cansler

Ruby Baldwin Cansler, 88 of Franklin, N.C., passed away Tuesday, July 10, 2012. Born in Macon County, she was the daughter of the late W. E. “Gene” and Geneva Parrish Baldwin. She was married to William V. “Bill” Cansler for 66 years.

She was a 1943 graduate of Franklin High School and coowner of Jack and Jill Children’s Shop for 34 years. She was a loving wife and dedicated mother and nana who liked growing red roses, gardening, cooking and canning. She was an active member of First Baptist Church.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by one daughter, Jane C. Kimsey of Franklin; two sons Robert E. “Bob”" Cansler and wife Loretta of Concord, N.C. and Dan Cansler of Sylva, N.C.; two sisters, Lolita B. West and Nora Jean Kinsland and husband Bo all of Franklin, and one brother, Ralph Baldwin of Franklin; four grandchildren, Rebecca C. Hunter and husband Robbie of Concord, N.C., Sarah K. Shearl and husband Allan of Franklin, Reece W. Kimsey of Charleston, S.C. and Danielle Cansler of Sylva, N.C.; two great-grandchildren, Cameron V. Shearl and Mason T. Hunter and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by infant son, Freddie Cansler; infant brother, Bruce Baldwin and brother, Gus Baldwin.

Funeral services were held Friday, July 13, at First Baptist Church with Rev. Robert Brown, Rev. Jim Dusek and Rev. Harold Ball officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery. Pallbearers were David Bradley, Mark West, Mike Kinsland, Greg Kinsland, David Kinsland and John Cansler.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Freda Lucille Vinson BrabsonFreda Lucille Vinson Brabson

Freda Lucille Vinson Brabson, 85, of Otto, passed away Tuesday, July 10, 2012.

Born in Scaly Mtn., she was the daughter of the late Harley F. Vinson and Bessie McCall Vinson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dan Harrison Brabson a brother, Leonard Vinson and sister, Cleo Jones. She loved to read, sew and work with puzzles. She enjoyed cooking and gardening. She was an avid Atlanta Braves fan and was a member of Tessentee Church of God.

She is survived by three daughters, Diane Brabson and Gloria Lee Brabson both of Cumming, Ga. and Sandra Lynn Brabson Dutton and husband Sherrill of Seymour, Tenn.; brothers, Clinton, Sheridan and Denver Vinson all of Otto, Louis Vinson of Canton, Ohio and Dallas Vinson of Ringgold, Ga.; sister, Martha Rogers of Otto and two grandchildren, Jacqueline Nicole Dutton and Steven Daniel Dutton.

Funeral service was held Saturday, July 14, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Eugene Moore, Rev. Robert Dryman and Rev. Don Moffitt officiated. Burial was in Rush Cemetery. Nephews served as pallbearers.

Alice Jewell Bohannon Quinn

Alice Jewell Bohannon Quinn, 84, of Florida died July 12, 2012, at St. Catherine Rehab Hospital of Hileah Gardens, Fla.

She was born June 23, 1928, in Broxton, Ga., to the late Austin Columbus Bohannon Sr. and the late Fare Belle Gilleon Bohannon. She was a member of and employed by First Baptist Church of Franklin, N.C., as a Special Events Coordinator. She was also a homemaker and former kindergarten teacher. She is preceded in death by three brothers and six sisters, Willie Mae (Bill) Bohannon England, Evelyn (Edd) Bohannon Browning, A.C. Bohannon, Jr., William Jasper (Bud) Bohannon, Owen Dorsey Bohannon, Noretta Bohannon Beall, Jonnie Bohannon Deel, Ethel Bohannon Kilpatrick and Betty Bohannon Towers.

Survivors include daughter, Karen Quinn and husband, Gordon Von Nehring of N. Miami Beach, Fla.; sons, Wes Quinn and fiance Barbara Durcan of Carlton, Stan Quinn and wife Esther of Danville, Calif. and Calvin Quinn of Carlton; grandsons, Austin Von Nehring and Scott Von Nehring of N. Miami Beach, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 16, at Eureka Baptist Church with Rev. Wayne Bennett officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Wainright-Parlor Funeral Home.


 

Mary Newman McCoy

Mary Newman McCoy, 69, of Appomattox, passed away Thursday, June 28, 2012 at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of Billy Bruce McCoy.

Born June 18, 1943 in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of the late Floyd Irvine Newman and Lucile Carwile LaForce. She was a retired school teacher with the Macon County School System for 20 years and was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Naruna. Mrs. McCoy was a graduate of Mars Hill College, Mars Hill, North Carolina, and a member of the Daughters of the Confederacy and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. McCoy has survived by her daughter, Susan M. Clark and her husband, Chad Clark of Franklin: two sons, David P. McCoy and his wife, Araceli of El Paso, Texas and Joel McCoy and his wife, Heather of Franklin; one sister, Shelby N. Huff of Appomattox.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Appomattox Rescue Squad.

Whitten Funeral Homes and Cremation Services, Park Avenue Chapel, is serving the family.


 


Ellen Armstrong TallentEllen Armstrong Tallent

Ellen Armstrong Tallent, age 69, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Wednesday, July 11, 2012. She was born in Black Oak, Ark., the daughter of the late Marvin and Lorene Waites Armstrong. She had worked at Walmart for 29 years, most recently as a department manager in Clayton, Ga., and had worked at Burlington for 24 years. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She coached and played softball for 40 years, she loved spending time at the lake and dirt track racing, and attended Franklin Church of Christ.

She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Joe “Mule” Tallent; two daughters, Joanne Tallent of Clarkesville, Ga. and Karen Tallent of Franklin; one son, Ricky “Ribs” Tallent of Franklin; one sister, Myrna Kisner and husband John of Black Oak, Ark.; one brother, William “Dub” Armstrong and wife Polly, of Black Oak, Ark.; grandchildren, Jonathon Owens, Heather Gragg, Ashley Nix Miller and husband Ronnie, Gabriella Tallent and Samuel Tallent; one great-granddaughter, Kaydence; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services were held Sunday, July 15, in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home, with Rev. Don Moffitt officiating.

Robert Warren MungerRobert Warren Munger

Robert Warren Munger, 71, of Highlands, N.C., passed away Saturday, July 14, 2012. He was born in Macon County, the son of the late Robert Warren Munger Sr. and Dora Lucille Lowe. He was preceded in death by a sister, Kathy Munger. He was a self employed plumber and electrician. He was a loving father, grandfather, brother and friend who liked to hunt and fish. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Viet Nam War.

He is survived by one daughter, Bobby Jo Munger of Milledgeville, Ga.; two sons, Kelly Warren Munger and wife Brenda of Franklin, N.C. and Robert DeWalt Munger and wife Lisa of Young Harris, Ga.; four sisters, Susie McDaniel and husband Ivey of Lexington, N.C.; Joyce Rogers and husband Steve, Margaret Rish (husband Larry, deceased), and Michelle Rogers and husband Stacey all of Franklin; and seven brothers, Tony and wife Debbie of Lexington, Lawrence and wife Carol of Highlands, Tim Crane and wife Tammy of Franklin, Sherman Munger, Dale Munger, David Munger and wife Susan, and Christopher Munger all of Lexington; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held Wednesday, July 18, at Highlands Memorial Park with the Rev. Benny Bagwell officiating. Franklin Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter #994 conducted military graveside rites.

Henrietta AmmonsHenrietta Ammons

Henrietta Ammons, 82, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Sunday, July 15, 2012. Born in Macon County, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Texie Dills Beck. She was a nurse’s aide, retiring from Angel Hospital with 42 years service. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother and was a member of Clarks Chapel United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Thomas Ammons; one daughter, Vickie Wilkes and husband Weslie of Franklin; two grandchildren, Tommy Ammons and Jessica Webb and husband Dale and four great-grandchildren, Payton Ammons, Kallie Webb, Chelsea Webb and Colton Webb. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sons, Bruce and Roger Ammons.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, July 21, at 11 a.m. at Clarks Chapel United Methodist Church with Rev. Randy Perdue officiating.

Pete E. Phillips Sr.Pete E. Phillips Sr.

Pete E. Phillips Sr., 75, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Tuesday, July 3, 2012.

Born in Miami, Fla., he was the son of the late Edwin E. Phillips and Doris R. Phillips. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Rowena Grimes. Horse racing was his great passion and he enjoyed a distinguished 20-year career as a jockey. Retiring from racing in 1970 he entered the food and beverage industry owning several venues including the celebrated Flick Coffee House in Coral Gables, Fla. He was also very proud to have been a U.S. Marine Corps veteran.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Dana Valibus Phillips; three children, Peter Edwin Phillips Jr. of Greensboro, Ga., Lee Phillips Brantley of Savannah, Ga., Edward Valibus Phillips of Memphis, Tenn., and two grandsons, Barron and Bridges Brantley.

No services have been planned at this time.
