Louise C. Welch

Louise C. Welch, 92, of Franklin, passed away, Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2012.

Born in Floyd County, Iowa, she was the daughter of the late A. Howard Case and Calla E. Stone Case. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Paul Welch, who died on Feb. 7, 2011; a brother, Eugene Case and two sisters, Margaret Ann Case and Mary Schoenfeld. She was a former member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a member of Burningtown Baptist Church and was active in a local ladies prayer group. She was considered her family’s prayer warrior.

She is survived by two children, Dency Dailey and husband Tim of Franklin, Rev. Dr. Patrick Paul Welch and wife Gail of Hendersonville; step-son, Thomas Ray Welch and wife Shirley of Franklin and N.C.; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held Saturday, Aug. 11, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Larry Pons and Rev. Randy Drinnon officiated. Burial was in Welch Cemetery.

Arnita Hall Barbour

Arnita Hall Barbour, 81, of Franklin, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 9, 2012.

Born in Rockingham County, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Robert Hall and Ora Garrett Hall. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clayton Barbour who died Jan. 16, 2007. She was a Registered Nurse and was a member of Cowee Baptist Church.

She is survived by three sons, Lee Quitman Barbour of Murphy, N.C., Clayton Barbour Jr. of California and Robert Thomas Barbour of Franklin; three grandchildren and one great- grandchild.

No services are planned.

Rosemary HighsmithRosemary Highsmith

Rosemary Highsmith, 67, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Sunday, Aug. 12, 2012, at a local nursing home. She was born in Duval County, Fla., the daughter of the late Elton Roy and Lula Mae Scott Moore. She was married to the late Jerome Marvin Highsmith Sr. She was employed as a waitress and was of the Baptist faith. She was a loving mother, grandmother and aunt. She loved gardening.

She is survived by her daughter, Latresa Mason and husband, Ricky of Franklin; four sons, Robert Reibach and James Highsmith and wife Jennifer of Jacksonville, Fla., Jerome Marvin Highsmith Jr and wife Tracy of Franklin and Jeffery Ramon Highsmith of Jacksonville, Fla.; grandchildren, April, William, Heather, Stephanie, Robert, Deborah, Felicia, Marybeth, Jessica, Casey, Katlyn, Aubri, Laya, Brayden, and Gabriel; one great-granddaughter and one greatgrandson; four sisters-in-law; three brothers-in-law and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers.

Burial will be at Salt Springs Christian Church Cemetery, Salt Springs, Fla.

James Leslie HoltJames Leslie Holt

James Leslie Holt, 78, of Otto, N.C., passed away Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2012, at his residence. He was born in Dade County, Florida, the son of Jesse James and Loraine Maxwell Chastain Holt. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was retired from the Florida Department of Transportation. He loved to garden and farm and was a member of the Jehovah’s Witness Kingdom Hall Church.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Susie Bonnell Holt; daughters, Debra Bryan of Mountain City, Ga., and Elizabeth Ann Eastman of Orange Lake, Fla.; sons, John Daryl Holt of Branford, Fla. and James Edward (Eddie) Holt of Bell, Fla., William Roy Smith of Fairbanks, Fla. and John Matthew Smith of Trenton, Fla.; one sister, Janice Lea of Tenn.; one brother, Lawrence Holt of Miami, Fla. Nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren also survive.

Memorial services were held Saturday, Aug. 11, at Kingdom Hall Jehovah’s Witness Kingdom Hall Church with Brother Dan Holman officiating. Burial was at the Bethel Church of Christ Cemetery in Bell, Fla.

Rev. Thomas Samuel Taylor

Rev. Thomas Samuel Taylor, 72, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2012, at a local hospital after an extended illness. He was born in Macon County, the son of the late Memory Allen Taylor and Dixie Marie Pendergrass Taylor. He was a former radio evangelist of Clayton, Ga., and surrounding churches. He was of the Southern Baptist Faith.

He is survived by his wife of 14 years, Mary Lou Sanders Taylor of Franklin; one son, James Allen Taylor and his wife Felecia of Gatlinburg, Tenn.; two daughters, Tammy Charlene Allen and her husband, Nick of Honeapath, S.C. and Sherry Ann Nix and her husband, John Edward of Pickens, S.C.; six grandchildren, Chris, Jasmine and Johnathan Allen, Melissa and Edward Nix Jr and Matthew Taylor; two sisters, Gracie Coggins of Franklin, and Dolly Pattillo of Marietta, Ga.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Michael Allen; three brothers, James, Allen and Furman Taylor; and one sister, Lavada Ledford.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 11, in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Davis Hooper and Rev. Andrew Parker officiating. Burial was at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. Chris Allen, Edward Nix, Eddie Campell, Michael Sanders, Jared Gates, John Nix and Nick Allen served as pallbearers.

Gary Lee Curtis

Gary Lee Curtis, 78, of Franklin, N.C., passed away, Saturday, Aug. 11, 2012.

Born on Oct. 12, 1933, in Jamestown, N.Y., he was the son of the late Richard Curtis and Lucille Campbell Curtis. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Gail Curtis, who died Dec. 1, 2010. He honorably served in the U.S. Navy from 1950 to 1954. He retired from the Buffalo Police Department in 1982 after 20 years at the old Michigan Avenue Station. He relocated to Sebring, Fla. and later, Franklin.

He is survived by two daughters, Kelly Dodson of Buffalo, N.Y., and Julie Kobel and husband Donald of Lancaster, N.Y.; stepdaughter, Kathleen Jack and husband Greg of Belleville, Wisc. and step-son, David Keicher of Belleville, Wisc. and a grandson, Dana Dodson of St. Louis, Mo.

No services have been planned at this time.

Wm. Nelson CabeWm. Nelson Cabe

Wm. Nelson Cabe, 94, of the Mulberry Community, Otto, N.C., passed away Saturday, Aug. 11, 2012, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill, S.C. He was a native of Macon County, the son of the late Lenzy and Mary Ledford Cabe. He was married to Emily Ruth Adams Cabe who passed away in 2007. He was a U.S. WWII Army veteran where he served in the Panama Canal Zone and Aleutian Islands. He was a truck driver for Vinson Feed and Seed of Dillard, Ga. He liked farming and haying. He was a member of the Newman Chapel Baptist Church.

He is survived by his daughter, Patsy C. Kelly and her partner in life, Hartley Watkins of Otto, and his son, Dennis Cabe and wife Kathy of Smyrna, S.C.; his brother, Arvil Cabe of Rabun Gap, Ga.; grandchildren, Tonia Kelly McRary and husband, Johnathan, Ray Kelly and Lenzy Kelly; great-grandchildren, Logan and Ian McRary, and William and Emily Kelly. He was preceded in death by a sister, Jane Speed and two brothers, Russell Cabe and Elvin Cabe.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 14, in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Alton Dendy and Rev. Danny Cannon officiating. Burial was at Newman Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery.

Charles Robert Burchett Sr.

Charles Robert Burchett Sr., 66, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Aug. 8, 2012. Born in Lake County, Fla., he was the son of the late Charles Emmett and Kathleen Galloway Burchett. He was a mechanic and auto parts salesman; was a veteran of the U.S. National Guard and a member of the Early Farm Equipment Association.

He is survived by his wife, Janel Andrus Burchett; two sons, Charles “Rob” Robert Burchett Jr. and his wife, Kasey, of Rolesville, N.C., Brant Michael Burchett and his fiancee, Trista, Chase of Wilmington, N.C.; one sister, Janet B. Marks and husband Mickey of Zellwood, Fla.; five grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Virginia Nicholson McConnell, 85, of Grayson, Ga., passed away Saturday, Aug. 11, 2012, at Eastside Medical Center in Snellville, Ga. She was born in Sheridan, Wyo., the daughter of the late Thomas Wylie Nicholson Sr. and Velma Henderson Nicholson. She was a member of Stone Mountain First United Methodist Church. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and she loved gardening. She was a 1947 graduate of Webster High School and attended Blantons Business College.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Teddy R. Mc- Connell; her daughter, Beverly McConnell of Grayson, Ga.; her son, Jerry McConnell and his wife Mary Beth of Gainesville, Ga.; a sister, Ralphine Blanton of Sylva, N.C.; a brother, Tommy Nicholson of Webster, N.C.; three grandchildren, Chris, Scott and Jenna McConnell.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 14, in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. David Beam officiating. Burial was at Woodlawn Cemetery.

Dianne Deitz RotenDianne Deitz Roten

Dianne Deitz Roten, 64, of Franklin, died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2012, of a rare autoimmune disease called cardiac amyloidosis, causing congestive heart failure.

Born in Jacksonville, Fla., she was the daughter of the late Cline Deitz and Jewel Bennett Deitz Crawford. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by paternal grandparents; Danah Hall Deitz and Alvin Deitz. She owned and operated Dianne’s Beauty Salon for 33 years, from 1977 to 2010. She was a member of Holly Springs Baptist Church, member of Nite Owl Bowling League and a supporter of Relay for Life. She enjoyed sewing, cooking and gardening; and was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her husband of 46 years, William A. “Bill” Roten; three children, Paula Renee Roten Myers and husband David Myers of Franklin, Kevin Duane Roten and wife Jeana Cookston Roten of Anderson, S.C. and Revonda Kaye Roten of Franklin; three grandchildren, Erica Kate Myers, Alex Jarod Roten and Madelyn Elise Roten; sister, Denise Deitz Dries and husband Joe Dries of Sylva; brother, Danny Deitz of Sylva; two step brothers, Randy Crawford of Keystone Heights, Fla., and Ronnie Crawford and wife Eva of Morristown, Tenn.; two step sisters, Darlene Stokley and husband Bob of Keystone Heights, Fla. and Donna Sullivan and husband Danny of Keystone Heights, Fla.; step father, Kenneth Crawford of Keystone Heights, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 11, at Holly Springs Baptist Church. Rev. Eddie Trull and Rev. Brandon Breedlove officiated.
