Robert Cabe, 82, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Monday, Aug. 27, 2012. Born in Macon County, he was the son of the late Harley and Ida Elliott Cabe. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean War. He was a carpenter and liked to hunt, fish, and garden and loved being outdoors. He was a member of Mashburn Branch Baptist Church and was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Nell Gibson Cabe; one daughter, Shirlene Spradlin and husband Melvin of Franklin; two sisters, Margie Lee Hooper of Franklin and Dora Lee Garrett of Raleigh, N.C.; one brother, Wiley Cabe of Franklin; three grandchildren, Amanda McMahan and husband Robert, Jody Spradlin and LeeAnn Higdon and husband Brandon; and six great-grandchildren, Zachary, Austin, Blake, Brandon and Kaylyn McMahan and Mia Higdon. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Roy, Albert, Carl and Luther Cabe and a grandson, Kevin Eugene Spradlin.
Funeral services were held Friday, Aug. 31, in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Alton Dendy and Rev. Ben Cabe officiating. Burial was in Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were Clyde McCall, Billy Hurst, Tom Riles, Earl Holland, Danny Hooper, Jay Hooper, Ronnie Hooper and Isaac Gibson. Carl Angel served as honorary pallbearer.

Hayes Eugene Houston
Hayes Eugene Houston, 90, of Franklin, N.C., passed away on Sunday, Sept. 2, 2012.
Born in Macon County, he was the son of the late Emlis Green Houston and Emma McCoy Houston. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by seven sisters, Bertha Crisp, Beulah Speed, Bonnie Speed, Eva Frady, Tina Houston, Leliah Henry and Mattie McCoy and five brothers, Bob, Jay, R.L., Raleigh and Emlis Green Houston, Jr. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII serving in the European Theater. He was a member of 36th Combat Engineers A Company and recipient of six Bronze Service Stars. He was a member of Liberty Baptist Church, New Port News, Va., and a member of the American Legion Post 108. He was an avid Atlanta Braves fan; enjoyed gardening, taking care of his lawn; helping others and above all he loved his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Virginia Earles Houston; two sons, Richard Houston and wife Jean of Hampton, Va., and Gary Houston and wife Faith of Cobb, Ga.; sister, Shirley Reagor of Houston, Texas; three grandchildren, Kevin Gene Houston, Julie Beck and husband Henry and Laura Kendrick and husband Brad; one great-granddaughter, Carly Beck and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral service was held Tuesday, Sept. 4, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Davis Hooper will officiated. Burial was in the Woodlawn Cemetery with military rites conducted by the VFW Post 7339 and the American Legion Post 108.
Pallbearers were Kevin Houston, Brad Kendrick, Henry Beck, Conrad Henry, Ken Morgan and Chris Ott.

Jerry Deuane Hedden
Jerry Deuane Hedden, 66, of Morganton, N.C., passed away Aug. 26, 2012. He was born Dec. 10, 1945, in Franklin, N.C., to the late Mr. and Mrs. G.D. and Pearl Miller Hedden. He was a member of Crossover Community Church. He was a coach in Fannin County for 28 years. He is preceded in death by brother, Roland Keener.
Survivors include wife, Linda Lance Hedden; son, Chris Hedden; daughter and son-in-law, Lori and Kevin Bundy; sister and brother-in-law, Patricia and Sam Leinbach, sister and brother-inlaw, Polly and Mack McCoy; brother, Roy Keener; brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Paulette Keener; and two grandchildren, Kaylee and Luke Bundy.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 28, from the Crossover Community Church, with the Rev. Rick Cortis and Rev. Jeff Beavers officiating. Music was by Dereck Rosas. Interment followed in the Morganton Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were Kevin Lance, Richard Daves, Sarandy Gaitanoglou, Randy Hallmark, Larry Lance, Gary Lance, John Gaitanoglou, Lee Peters and Myron Ryder. Honorary pallbearers were coach's former players.

Elizabeth "Betty" Ray Richardson, 84, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2012. Born in Mecklenburg County, she was the daughter of the late James Bryan and Bessie Myers Ray. She was an office clerk for Allstate Insurance. She attended Mt. Harmony Baptist Church.
She is survived by two sons, Steven D. Richardson and wife Peggy of St. Louis, Mo. and David W. Richardson and wife Karen of Gastonia, N.C.; one sister, Helen Ray of Franklin, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mamie Addington Wise
Mamie Addington Wise, 87, resident of 1110 Marshall Road, wife of Raleigh Warren Wise, passed away Friday, Aug. 31, 2012, at Self Regional Medical Center.
Born in Franklin, N.C., Jan. 25, 1925, she was a daughter of the late Jacob Weaver and Nina Cabe Addington. A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, she was formerly employed with Dupont Chemical Corporation as a Chemist. She was retired from Monsanto Chemical of Charleston, W.Va., where she served as a technical librarian.
Surviving in addition to her husband Warren, whom she married Dec. 5, 1957, are three nieces; two nephews; and her baby cats, Baby Kitty and Tiger. She was preceded in death by a brother, A.B. Addington; sister, Mary A. Keels; and a nephew, Albert W. Addington.
Graveside services will be conducted Saturday, Sept. 8, at 11 a.m. at Union United Methodist Church Cemetery in Franklin, with Rev. Gervase C. Hitch officiating.
