Barbara Jean HurstBarbara Jean Hurst

Barbara Jean Hurst, 62, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Monday, Oct. 8, 2012. She was a native of Macon County, the daughter of the late Junior and Pearl Russell Webb. She was a homemaker and loving mother and grandmother. She loved to take pictures and spend time with family. She was of the Baptist faith.

She is survived by her husband of 20 years, John C. Hurst; a daughter, Selena Lakey of Franklin; two sons, John Webb and wife Jennifer of Sylva, N.C. and Brannin Lakey Jr. and wife Rebecca of Knoxville, Tenn.; five grandchildren, Daniel, Abigail, Kaitlyn, Noah, and Logan also survive.

Funeral services were held Friday, Oct. 12, at Zion Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Eddie Stillwell officiating. Burial was in the Church Cemetery.

Arnold Richmond KeenerArnold Richmond Keener

Arnold Richmond Keener, 85, passed away Thursday, Oct. 11, at Highlands-Cashiers Hospital. He was a native of Macon County, the son of the late John Richmond and Bertha Zona Smith Keener. He was a WWII veteran of the U.S. Army in Germany and was a member of the Goldmine Baptist Church. He was a retired foreman for the Town of Highlands Electrical Crew.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Eunice Martin Keener; two sons, Grant Keener and his wife, Martha of Franklin, N.C. and Alvin "Skip" Keener and his wife, Ladonna of Highlands, N.C.; one brother, J.B. Keener of Highlands; five grandchildren, Wesley Keener, Brooklynn Keener, Perrin Keener, Sarah Rutter and Matthew Keener and two great-grandchildren, Nathan Keener and Lilly Rutter. He was preceded in death by a sister, Della McCall.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 13, at the Highlands First Baptist Church with Rev. Roy Lowe, Rev. Greg Rogers and Rev. Charles Harris officiating. Burial was held at Highlands Memorial Park. Thad Watson, Varney Watson, Farrell Justice, Grover McCall, John McCall, Weldon Keener, Ervin Keener and Wayne Justice served as pallbearers.

Martha Bierer, 86, of Franklin, passed away Monday, Oct. 15, 2012.

Doris L. Marshall

Doris L. Marshall, 88 of Lutz, Fla., passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2012.

She was born in Springfield, Mo., to Alfred and Sylvia Meares on Oct. 24, 1923, and she moved to the Tampa area in 1945. She was of the Baptist faith and was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She was predeceased by her husband of 71 years; Ralph W. Marshall Sr. Survivors include her sons, Ralph Marshall Jr. (Kathy) and David Marshall (Bonnie); daughters, Ann Sale and Yvonne Morris (Don); brother-in-law, H.C. Marshall; sister-in-law, Margie Marshall, nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral service was held on Saturday, Oct. 6, at Blount & Curry Funeral Home, Tampa, Fla.

Dolores HubbardDolores Hubbard

Dolores Hubbard, 83, of Ocala, Fla., and Franklin, N.C., passed away on Sept. 30, 2012 at Tuscany Hospice House.

She was born on April 28, 1929, in Springboro, Pa. She is survived by her daughters, Sandra Griffin of Weirsdale, Fla., and Helen Skelton of Ocala, Fla.; grandchildren Thomas, Eric, and Stephen Pindur; Matthew and Kristin Skelton; and three great-grandchildren.

After a career in banking, she graduated from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, moved to Florida and taught elementary school. After retiring from teaching in 1993, she moved to Sylva in 1997 where she volunteered for several community agencies. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Sylva where she led the youth group. She also worked at MedWest-Harris.

She enjoyed the mountains and has many fond memories of the friends she met there. She enjoyed reading, gardening, cooking, traveling, volunteering, and spending time with her family. Since 2004, she has lived in Franklin and Ocala, Fla.

A celebration of her life was held on Oct. 7 in Ocala. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Marion County, Fla., or the local charity of your choice.


 

Lyndon Ray Reed

Lyndon Ray Reed, 66, of Sylva, N.C., passed away Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was the son of the late Grady and Delia Allison Reed. He was a rock mason by trade and enjoyed hunting and fishing in his free time.

He is survived by his girlfriend, Ruth Ledford of Franklin, N.C.; one son, Justin Reed and his wife Sarah of Sylva, and one daughter, Teresa Adkins and her husband Chris of Moyock, N.C.; three grandchildren- Robin, JJ and Paelynn; two brothers, Doyle Reed and Winston Reed and his wife Linda; two sisters, Wanda Moss and Rachel Sutton, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was well loved and will be dearly missed by his many friends and family

A memorial service was held Saturday, Oct. 13, at Greens Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. David Burch, Benny Bagwell and Tom Lavin officiating.

Appalachian Funeral Services assisted the family with arrangements.


 

Howard Jacob MinceyHoward Jacob Mincey

Howard Jacob Mincey, 79, of Franklin, passed away Monday, Oct. 15, 2012.

Born in Macon County, he was the son of the late Fred H. Mincey and Bessie Young Mincey. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Bud Mincey and two sisters, Joan Erbele and Freda Henry. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and served during the Korean conflict. He worked for Alvin Crowe and Schmidt Construction; enjoyed woodworking and cabinet making; loved fishing with his grandchildren and loved reading his Bible. He was a member of Mashburn Branch Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, a Sunday School teacher for 15 years and Sunday School superintendent. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Barbara Angel Mincey; son, Mike Mincey and wife Nora of Franklin; daughter, Darlene Klimas and husband Bill of Franklin; two grandsons, Billy and Kevin Klimas; three step-grandchildren, Brian and Brent Vinson and Katie Brunt; great-granddaughter, Madison Klimas and three step-great grandchildren, Neelley, Sam and Luke Vinson.

Funeral service was held Wednesday, Oct. 17, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Greg Rogers and Rev. Wiley Gibson officiated. Burial was in the Ellijay Baptist Church Cemetery with graveside rites conducted by VFW Post 7339 and American Legion Post 108.

Pallbearers were Brian Vinson, Brent Vinson, Don Deal, Chuck Bailey, JD Gibson and Isaac Gibson.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Mashburn Baptist Church.

Valerie Theresa Letner DorvalValerie Theresa Letner Dorval

Valerie Theresa Letner Dorval, 47, of Otto, N.C., passed away Sunday, Oct. 14, 2012.

Born in Wilmington, Del., she was the daughter of Roy A. Letner and Elizabeth Marie Pinkowski Wilhelm Letner. She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter Dorval, who died Feb. 23, 2012. She was a hairdresser and was of the Catholic faith. She loved to read and spend time with her boys.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by two sons, Jesse Luke and Dawson Blane Dorval both of Otto; brother, Robert Wilhelm of Otto; niece, Nicole Wilhelm of Candler, N.C. and nephew, Robert C. Wilhelm of Cashiers, N.C.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 19, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral home. Rev. Davis Hooper will officiate.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Vera Lynn Winneberger

Vera Lynn Winneberger, 37, of Franklin, died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2012.

Born in Manatee County, Fla., she was the daughter of Valera Bussell of Colorado Springs, Colo., and the late Roger Dale Winneberger. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Chelsey Rich. She was a member of Rose Creek Baptist Church. She loved spending time with her girls and was a hard worker.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by two children, Ashley Taylor and Lexus Taylor both of Franklin; two sisters, Lisa Diane Smith of Florida and Michelle Winneberger of Philadelphia, Pa.; three brothers, Roger Winneberger of Colorado Springs, Colo., Jesse Winneberger of Baltimore, Md. and Christopher Winneberger of Philadelphia, Pa.; grandmother, Joyce Jouron of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a niece and several nephews.

A memorial service was held Saturday, Oct. 13, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home.

Gary Eugene CollettGary Eugene Collett

Gary Eugene Collett, 57, of Sylva, N.C., passed away Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2012.

Born in Murphy, he was the son of Gene Collett and Bennie Cloer Collett. He was former Division Supervisor for Pepsico (Taco Bell). and worked as a technician for U.S. Clean. He was an actor in the 1980s and had roles in several popular movies and TV series.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by brother, Ron Collett and wife Tori of Raleigh; three nieces, Vanessa, Naomi and Chelsea and three great-nephews, Ellijah, Jude and Sloan.

A memorial service was held Saturday, Oct. 13, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Bob Crawford officiated.

James ‘Jim’ Walter SimpsonJames ‘Jim’ Walter Simpson

James “Jim” Walter Simpson, 66, of Franklin, passed away Sunday, Oct. 14, 2012.

Born in Knoxville, Tenn., he was the son of Mary Elizabeth Franklin Simpson and the late William Dean “Doug” Simpson. He loved planting trees and bushes and enjoyed being outside. He was a member of Cowee Baptist Church and was a former Sunday School teacher.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 13 years, Jerrie Elaine Pruitt Simpson; son, Jason Simpson of Franklin; step-son, James Davis of Franklin; two brothers, David Simpson and Bob Simpson both of Franklin; sister, Mary Ray of Snellville, Ga.; grandson, Levi Davis and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held Wednesday, Oct. 17, at Cowee Community Center/Fire and Rescue. Rev. Andy Cloer officiated.
