Aletha Bernice Keener Talley

Aletha Bernice Keener Talley, 82, of Highlands, N.C., passed away on Saturday, Nov. 10, at her home. She was a native and lifelong resident of Highlands. She was a member of Shortoff Baptist Church. She had been employed at both Highlands Cleaners and Laundry and Peoples Department Store in Highlands. Her most important career was that of a loving wife and mother. She was the daughter of Claude and Alma Henderson Keener of Highlands and was preceded in death by her brother, Ben Keener.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Ed T. Talley, a daughter Belinda Lindsay of Fletcher, N.C.; sons, Tommy Talley of Norcross, Ga., and son, Kenny Talley of Highlands; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 12, at the Bryant- Grant Funeral Home in Highlands with Rev. Andy Cloer officiating. Interment was at the Miller Cemetery in Highlands.

GGene Siler Passmoreene Siler Passmore

Gene Siler Passmore, 51, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2012. Born in Macon County, he was the son of the late Siler and Minta Bell Hicks Passmore. He was employed by Rhodes paving and loved to hunt; loved Nascar racing and collecting Nascar memorabilia and antiques. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and was a member of Cartoogechaye Church of God.

He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Bettie Sue Couch Passmore; a daughter, Amanda Witiak and husband Kyle of East Earl, Pa.; a step-daughter, Valerie Dills of Franklin, and a special stepdaughter, Alyssa Birdsell; three sons, Stevie Mason, Gene Siler Passmore II and Gary Michael Passmore all of Franklin, and a step-son, Ray Dills and wife Amanda of Maiden, N.C. and two brothers, Willard and Dillard Passmore of Franklin, and 13 grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Harold Passmore.

Funeral services were held Friday, Nov. 9, in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Dryman and Rev. Mark Bishop officiating. Burial was in Aquone Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were Nathan Harris, Willard Passmore, Harold Mathis, Randy, Kevin Passmore, Bud Elliott and Fred Russell.

Winston Carrington Lill

Winston Carrington Lill passed away Thursday, Nov. 1, 2012, in New Orleans, La. He was the husband of Dorothy McCutcheon Lill; father of Winston C. Lill, Jr. and Helen Lill Craige. Also survived by three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was a summer visitor and part-time resident of Wayah Road, in Franklin, N.C., from 1950 until 2005. Episcopal graveside services were held at Woodlawn Cemetery on Saturday, Nov. 17, at 10 a.m. with Rev. Carl Southerland officiating.

CCharlene Gladys Bryant Hendricksharlene Gladys Bryant Hendricks

Charlene Gladys Bryant Hendricks, 96, of Highlands, N.C., passed away Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012. Born in Graves County, Ky., she was the daughter of Chester D. and Effie Givens Bryant. She was married to Samuel Hardin Hendricks who died in February 2008. She was an elementary school teacher in Duval County school system in Jacksonville, Fla.; was a member of Highlands Women’s Club and a member of Community Bible Church where she was a Sunday school teacher.

She is survived by one son, John Bryant Hendricks and wife Karen of Highlands, and two grandchildren, Hannah Marie Hendricks of Conroe, Texas and Joshua Bryant Hendricks of Cullowhee, N.C. She was preceded in death by a son, Ronald "Ronnie" Hendricks; three sisters, Elsie, Mary Elizabeth and Betty and one brother, Willard Bryant.

Memorial services were held Sunday, Nov. 11, at Community Bible Church in Highlands with Pastor Gary Hewins and Pastor Steve Kerhoulas officiating. A graveside service was held Friday, Nov. 9, at Jacksonville Memory Gardens, Jacksonville, Fla.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Four Seasons Hospice, 571 South Allen Road, Flat Rock, NC 28731.

JJames Frank McCallames Frank McCall

James Frank McCall, 91, of Highlands, N.C., passed away Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2012. Born in Macon County, he was the son of the late William Bryan McCall and the late Maude Conley Shope. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving during WWII. He was a carpenter and was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He loved to hunt, fish, and make wooden bowls and lamps and loved doing things for others. He was a member of Clear Creek Baptist Church where he was former Sunday school superintendent and deacon and trustee of Clear Creek Community Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Dolly Wilson McCall; two daughters, Donna Ivie and husband Doug of Clarkesville, Ga., and Cheryl McCall Wilson and husband Larry D. of Gainesville, Ga.; two sons, Bert McCall and wife Stephanie and Yogi Craig McCall and wife Lynn J. all of Highlands; one sister, Vivian Chastain of Highlands; three brothers, Conley Bascombe Shope and Edd Lake Shope both of Otto, N.C. and Fred Jess Shope of Lavonia, Ga.; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six sisters and four brothers.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 10, at Clear Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Jim Kinard and Rev. Everett Wilson officiating. Burial was in Clear Creek Community Cemetery. Pallbearers were Den Chastain, David Chastain, Charlie Hicks, Doc Wilson, George Schmitt, Steve Nix, R. L. Wilson and Edwin Wilson. Honorary pallbearers were Josh Wilson, Clarence Wilson, Craig Dale McCall, Peyton Ivie, Willie Mahler, Jacob Bowen and Ryan Bryson. Franklin VFW Post #7339 and American Legion Post # 108 performed full military graveside rites.

Myron “Toad” Otis Townsend, 84, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012.

A Memorial Service was held Saturday, Nov. 10, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. VFW Post 7339 conducted full military rites.

EEmma Lee Tallent Clarkmma Lee Tallent Clark

Emma Lee Tallent Clark, 90, of Franklin, N.C., passed away on Friday, Nov. 9, 2012.

Born in Macon County on Nov. 12, 1921, she was the daughter of the late George and Ida Roper Tallent. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lemuel Robert Clark who passed away on Sept. 13, 2004; six brothers, Lloyd, Weaver, Eugene, Frank, Cecil and James and three sisters, Pallie Tallent, Eddis Poindexter and Anna Lois Martin. She was a member of Cowee Baptist Church for over 70 years.

She is survived by three sons, Jim Clark and wife Pat of Chapel Hill, N.C., Harold Clark and wife Kim of Franklin, and Max Clark and Patti of Durham, N.C.; three grandchildren; four step grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was held Monday, Nov. 12, at Cowee Baptist Church. Rev. Ronnie Branson, Rev. Charles Stevens and Rev. Clark Sheffield officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were J.R. Clark, Matthew Clark, Clarence Clark, Sterling Peek, Dennis Martin, Grover Sheffield Jr., Mike Simons and Olin Ledford.

Doyle George Peek

Doyle George Peek, 81, of Lula, Ga., passed away on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012, at his home. He was born in Macon County and was the son of the late George and Honor Grace Cabe Peek. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He attended Free Chapel Church in Gainesville, Ga.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Martha Jewell Peek; sons, Dale Peek and wife Terri of Canton, Ohio and Steve Peek of Seneca, S.C.; sisters, Ruth McClure of Otto, N.C. and Mary Ann Greenway of Hartwell, Ga.; brothers, Leroy Peek of Lenoir, N.C. and Issac Peek of Canton, Ohio, and two grandchildren, Christina and Jesse Peek. He is preceded in death by two sisters, Evelyn Peek Layell and Frances Mashburn.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Nov. 14, at Townson- Rose Funeral Home in Hayesville with Fred Greenway and Rev. Alex Stevens officiating. Interment was in the Union Hill Cemetery in Hayesville.

Glenda F. Wyatt

Glenda F. Wyatt, 63, of Franklin, passed away on Monday, Nov. 12, 2012.

She was born at Glendale hospital in Palatka, Fla., on Jan. 9, 1949, and was the daughter of the late Daniel Clifford Massey Sr. and Mary Helen Moody Massey. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Daniel Clifford Massey Jr., Robert Henry Massey and Steven Massey. She was of the Baptist faith.

She is survived by her ex-husband, James Wyatt of Franklin; daughter, Robbin Ball of Florida; sister, Donna Marie Harris of Interlachen, Fla.; brother, Homer Jerry Massey of Palatka, Fla.; two grandchildren, Glenda Ranee Ball and James Adam Ball.

No services have been planned at this time.

Ann Mikol

Ann Mikol, 94, of Franklin, N.C., passed away, Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012. She was born on Feb. 21, 1918 in Arenac County, Mich., the daughter of the late Stanley and Verna Rajewski. She was married to Adam Mikol until his death in 1995. She retired from the Standish Hospital, was a home maker, and a member of the Catholic Church.

She is survived by her grandchildren, John (Page) Mikol of Rural Hall, N.C., Michelle (Scott) Boettjer of Indianapolis, Ind., her great-grandchildren, Jason Forsythe of Indianapolis, Ind., Brianna Mikol of Cullowhee, N.C., Adrian Mikol of Raleigh, N.C. and her daughter-in-law Marena Mikol of Franklin.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Steve, Frank, Ed and Ted, her sister, Mildred and her son, Donald.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.
