Jerry Fouts DillsJerry Fouts Dills

Jerry Fouts Dills, 78, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013. A lifelong resident of Macon County, he was the son of the late Lester B. and Exie Henderson Dills. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean Conflict and was a retired lineman with Duke Energy with 31 years service.

He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who loved his family dearly and enjoyed fishing and gardening. He was a former member of Franklin VFW.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Nina Norris Dills; a daughter, Mitzi Dills Warman and husband David of Otto, N.C.; a son, A. Nick Dills and wife Jennifer of Crestview, Fla.; two sisters, Evelyn Huber of Franklin, and Modean Wray of Columbia, S.C. and a brother, Glenn Dills of Franklin; five grandchildren, Torie, Brooklyn, Tyler, Hunter and AnnaRose.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 9, in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Al Beck and Rev. Matt Morris officiating. Burial was in Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were Tyler Warman, Bruce Elliott, Larry Norris, Chris Norris, Torie Waldroop and Chad Elliott.

Franklin VFW Post #7339 and American Legion Post #108 will perform full military graveside rites.

Thelma Buchanan Morrison SmithThelma Buchanan Morrison Smith

Thelma Buchanan Morrison Smith, 94, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013.

Born in Macon County, she was the daughter of the late James Ellis Buchanan and Maude Welch Buchanan. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Charlie Morrison; second husband, Paul Smith; brothers, Kenneth Buchanan and Max Buchanan and sisters, Pearl Campbell and Anna Mae Brabson. She was the oldest living member of Windy Gap Baptist Church. She was very dedicated and faithful serving as Young Adult Sunday School teacher for many years. Her church was her life. Before becoming a member of Windy Gap, she was a member of Cowee Baptist Church, where she also taught Sunday School for many years. She was very knowledgeable of God’s Word. She was raised by Godly parents, who instilled in her the love of God.

She is survived by three brothers, Wade Buchanan of Ft. Mills, S.C., Branch Buchanan and Raleigh Buchanan both of Franklin, and several nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews and her loving church family.

Funeral service was held Sunday, Feb. 10, at Windy Gap Baptist Church. Rev. Mark Bishop and Rev. Lloyd Fish officiated. Burial was in the Iotla Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were James Brabson, Roger Brabson, Jerry Brabson, Nathan Brabson, Luke Bateman, Matthew Bateman, Adam Tallent and Brandon Peek. Honorary pallbearers were deacons of Windy Gap Baptist Church.

Vickie SouthardVickie Southard

Vickie Southard, 55, of Franklin, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013.

Born in Macon County, she was the daughter of the late Henry J. Keener and Betty Gregory Keener. Vickie worked at Walmart in the Pharmacy and was a member of Franklin Church of God.

She is survived by her son, Hank Southard of Franklin; exhusband, James M. Southard of Franklin and her special friend, Elyssa L. Sanford of Franklin.

Funeral service was held Saturday, Feb. 9, at Franklin Church of God. Rev. Thurman Jenkins, Rev. Robert Dryman and Rev. Hank Conners officiated. Burial was in Mt. Zion Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Barry Downs, Dewey Elliott, Mike Gregory, Benny Hampton, David Southard and Hank Southard. Ethan Elliott, Matthew Elliott, Travis Pendergrass, Tony Southard, Dean Kreis and Charles Hartley served as honorary pallbearers.

Amy Sue Ledford Cody

Amy Sue Ledford Cody, 59, of Franklin, passed away Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013.

Born in Macon County, she was the daughter of the late Paul Ledford and Ida Patton Ledford. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Lee “C.L.” Cody who died Dec. 29, 2012; infant son, Tony Lee Cody; and brothers, Delano Bud, Ray, Lawrence, Wig and Buck Ledford. She loved to do word puzzles and was a member of Black Mountain Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for small children.

She is survived by two children, Brian Keith Cody and girlfriend, Savanna and Donna Sue Grant and husband Chris all of Franklin; two sisters, Maggie Mason of Franklin and Betty Worley of Otto; brothers, Charles “Curley” Ledford of Otto and Gene Ledford of Franklin and six grandchildren, Cameron Wayne Cody, Braden Lee Cody, Chasitiy Marie Davis, Summery Ann Davis, Kaitlyn Shephard and Simon; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was held Sunday, Feb. 10, at Black Mountain Baptist Church. Rev. Danny Cannon, Rev. Ernie Jamison and Rev. Kael Stencil officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were Mike “Bear” Carpenter, Michael Carpenter, Jeff Clark, David Ledford, Todd McConnell, Austin Price, David Price and Darren Worley.

Maria Salud GonzalezMaria Salud Gonzalez

Maria Salud Gonzalez, 86, of Franklin, N.C., formerly of Mexico, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013, in a local nursing home. She was born in Uriangato, Guanajuato, Mexico, the daughter of Francisco Dominguez and Maria Guadalupe Gonzalez Dominguez. She was married 60 years to Miguel Gonzalez Ruiz who passed away Jan. 9, 2003. She was a homemaker and attended St. Francis Catholic Church.

She is survived by her daughter, Angelina Mendez and her husband, Jose of Franklin; four sons, Rogelio Gonzalez and Luis Gonzalez of Mexico, Jose Guadalupe Gonzalez and Rafael Gonzalez of West Palm Beach, Fla. and Carlos Gonzalez of Waukegon, Ill.; a sister Angelina Dominguez of Winnie, Texas and a brother, Alfredo Dominguez of Dallas, Texas. A number of grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive.

A funeral mass was held Friday, Feb. 8, at St. Francis Catholic Church with Father Tien Duong officiating. Burial was held in Uriangato, Guanajuato, Mexico.

Luther H. PalmerLuther H. Palmer

Luther H. Palmer, 82, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Friday, Feb. 8, 2013.

Raised in Macon, Ga., he was the son of the late Stanton Luther Palmer and Margaret Catherine Giannini Palmer. He was a member of the 210th National Guard, MP Division; and a member of Burningtown Baptist Church. In his early career he managed propane offices in Georgia and North Carolina, and was an electrician and Macon County Electrical Inspector for many years. He enjoyed flying radio controlled airplanes, was an Amateur Radio Operator, and an avid Volkswagen enthusiast.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Shirley Joann Rowland Palmer; four children, Luther “Buddy” Palmer Jr. and wife Lynn of Marietta, Ga., Kathy Gail Palmer Orr and husband Robert of Franklin, Mark Palmer and wife Marlene Thomas of Woodruff, S.C. and Cori Palmer Reynolds and husband Matthew of South Jordan, Utah; sister, Charlotte Thompson of Wenatchee, Wash., eight grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his faithful companions, a Jack Russell Terrier, “Pup”, and two cats.

Funeral service was held Tuesday, Feb. 12, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Randy Drinnon officiated. Burial was in the Burningtown Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Robbie Holland, Harrison Orr, Ben Carpenter, Charlie Diez, Marty Rowland and Steve Keener. Honorary pallbearers were Bill Drinnon, Kenneth Mashburn, Terry Land, Wayne Cunningham and David Bradley.

Mildred Deal ThompsonMildred Deal Thompson

Mildred Deal Thompson, 84, of Otto, N.C., and Tiger, Ga., passed away Friday, Feb. 8, 2013.

Born in Macon County, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Jake Palmer Deal and Aver Watts Deal. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dale Thompson; niece, Renee Henry and two brothers, Floyd Deal and Charles “Frank” Deal. She was a retired teacher in Rabun County and was a member of the Georgia Retired Teachers Association and Persimmon Homemaker’s Club. She loved to crochet and knit and was a member of Holly Springs Baptist Church.

She is survived by two sisters, Susie Wiggins of Otto, and Joan Deal of Franklin, N.C.; brother, Fred Deal of Leasburg, N.C.; five nephews, Terry Deal, Tony Deal, Jamie Wiggins, Mark Deal and Randy Henry; two nieces, Laura Clark and Revonda Littrell and several great-nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was held Saturday, Feb. 9, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Vic Greene, Rev. Alton Dendy and Rev. Scott Cates officiated. Burial was in Rabun Memory Park in Tiger, Ga.

Pallbearers were Randy Henry, Terry Deal, Tony Deal, Mark Deal, Jamie Wiggins, Rob Clark and Lee Deal.

Wanda Kay Ledford TaylorWanda Kay Ledford Taylor

Wanda Kay Ledford Taylor, 66, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013. Born in Macon County, she was the daughter of the late Tom and Rose Garrett Ledford. She was a waitress for Huddle House for 25 years. She was a loving mother; a superb grandmother and was affectionately known as "The Mouth of the South." She was a member of Windy Gap Baptist Church.

She is survived by five daughters, Stephanie Deweese and husband Randy of Six Mile, S.C., Melissa Parker and husband Philip of Asheville, N.C., Candy Taylor, MacKenzie Taylor and Darlene Sizemore and husband John all of Franklin; two sisters, Glenda Ordway of Lincolnton, Ga., and Nancy Hicks of Franklin; five grandchildren, Joel and Matthew Deweese, Brandon and Andee Parker and Paxton Taylor; honorary son, Christopher Hicks of Franklin; a special friend, Bennie Reeves and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth and Boyd Ledford and a granddaughter, Sarah Amber Deweese.

A memorial service will be held Friday, Feb. 15, at 5 p.m. in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. John Rogers and Rev. Eddie Stillwell officiating. The family will receive friends Friday, Feb. 15, from 4 to 5 p.m., one hour prior to service at Bryant-Grant Funeral Home.

Ruby Esther JenkinsRuby Esther Jenkins

Ruby Esther Jenkins, 83, of Franklin, passed away Monday, Feb. 11, 2013.

Born in Macon County, she was the daughter of the late Alfred Gregory and Amanda Houston Gregory. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harley William Jenkins; three sons, Troy William Jenkins, Thomas Howard Jenkins and James Edgar Jenkins; sister, Ruth Hedden and a brother, Troy Gregory. She loved to play bingo and poker. She enjoyed fishing, camping, reading and collecting dolls. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church.

She is survived by her daughter, Ruby Mae Cisneros and husband Pete of Franklin; five sons, Richard “Rick” Jenkins and wife Eva Nell, Jerry Jenkins and wife Vicki, Carlos Jenkins, Ray Jenkins and wife Beverly and Joe Jenkins and wife Becky all of Franklin; brother, Harold Gregory of Stanley, N.C.; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was held Wednesday, Feb. 13, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Ronnie Owens and Rev. Barry Bowman officiated. Burial was in the Riverview Cemetery.

Grandsons served as pallbearers.

Delphia Denzel Evitt

Delphia Denzel Evitt, 98, of Highlands, N.C., passed away Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013. She was born in West Plains, Mo., the daughter of the late James Monroe Guilliams and Eliza McKinney Guilliams. She was married to Mack Evitt who passed away in 1965. She had worked as a CNA at Highlands-Cashiers Hospital. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She loved making afghans, crocheting and flowers. She was a member of Highlands First Assembly of God Church.

She is survived by three daughters, Kathleen Evitt of Sylva, N.C., Colene Ledbetter and Shirley Houston and her husband William Clinton of Highlands; eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren also survive. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Maxine Evitt; a son, Leland Evitt; four sisters and three brothers.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Feb. 13, at Highlands First Assembly of God Church, with Rev. Randy Reed and Rev. Jeff Houston officiating. Burial was in Evitt Cemetery. Pallbearers were Thad Evitt, Craig Evitt, Craig Montgomery, Chuck Knolton, David Shope, and Ben Houston.

James Lynn Mabery

James "Jim" Lynn Mabery, 73, of Otto, N.C., passed away Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013. Born in Trenton, N.J., he moved to Otto in 1986 from Mount Dora, Fla. He was a carpenter and was a member of the Longview Baptist Church in Franklin, N.C. He was a full time father and was very active in the lives of his five children. He was a member of the Lions Club of Mount Dora, Fla.; and was president of CareNet of Macon County for six years.

He is survived by a son, James Mabery IV of Panama City, Fla.; daughters, Kathryn Mabery of Ocala, Fla., June Perez of Orlando, Fla., Jill Shepard of Donna Vista, Fla. and Joy Speed of Clayton, Ga.; sisters, Barbara Houlberg of Ocala, and Elaine Schwarthoffer of Greer, S.C.; special granddaughter, Alberta Joy Speed and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and extended family.

Services will be held in Franklin at Longview Baptist Church, Friday, Feb. 15 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Tom Nahlens officiating. Burial will be held at Longview Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday, Feb. 15 from 1 to 2 p.m. at Longview Baptist Church.

Mildred Ledford BrysonMildred Ledford Bryson

Mildred Ledford Bryson, 92, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Monday, Feb. 11, 2013. She was born in Macon County, the daughter of the late Samuel and Ida Guy Ledford. She was married to the late Charles "Chic" Bryson who died in 2010. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Cyprian’s Episcopal Church. She had worked for Macon Program for Progress in the Early Head Start Program and worked for the U.S. Forest Service Older American Program.

She is survived by two daughters, Yvonne Bryson of Franklin, and Bobbie Bryson of Crofton, Md.; one son, Berton Bryson of Maggie, N.C.; three grandchildren, Kimberly, Norman and Jada Bryson. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three sons, Samuel Ted Ledford, Harrison Eugene Bryson and Charles H. "Tommy" Bryson Jr., and a brother, Samuel Bert Ledford.

Graveside services will be held Friday, Feb. 15, at 11 a.m. at St. Cyprian’s Episcopal Church Cemetery, with Rev. Dorrie Pratt officiating. The family will be at the residence of Yvonne Bryson, 126 Pressley Road, Franklin, NC.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to St. Cyperian’s Episcopal Church, 84 Church Street, Franklin, NC 28734.
