Gennell McConnell FoutsGennell McConnell Fouts

Gennell “Nell” McConnell Fouts, 82, Franklin, passed away Wednesday, March 6, 2013.

Born in Macon County, she was the daughter of the late Harley Otis McConnell and Viola DeHart McConnell. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Fouts and brothers, Wade and Wayne McConnell and a sister, Dovie McConnell. She was a good cook and enjoyed spending time with and talking to her family and friends. She was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.

She is survived by a son, Mike Fouts and wife Debbie of Franklin; brother, Harley McConnell of Franklin; sister, Betty McConnell of Franklin; half-sister, Virgie Southard; granddaughter, Danyel Crabtree and husband Samuel; several nieces and nephews and great-niece and nephew, Morgan and Josh Mason and many other great nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was held Saturday, March 9, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Eddie Stillwell and Rev. Bill Faulkner officiated. Burial was in Fouts Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Jessie Odell, Junior McConnell, Aaron Bowman, Eric Hall, Derek Conley and Scott Mason.

Memorial donations can be made to Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.

Janet Sue ErdmanJanet Sue Erdman

Janet Sue Erdman, 59, of Palmetto, Fla., passed away Oct. 26, 2012. She was the daughter of Harold Bert Hayes and Wilma Ruth Siegel.

She is survived by her children, Chris, Jeff, Kyleen, Lindsey Erdman; a sister, Carol Jordan; 13 grandchildren and a dear friend, Lorene Younger.

Noland Tildon Noland Tildon "Bud" Hudson, Jr.

Noland Tildon "Bud" Hudson, Jr. age 65, of Franklin, NC passed away Friday, March 8, 2013. Born in Danville, VA, he was the son of the late Noland Tildon and Lois Linda Graybill Hudson. He was owner of his own irrigation business; was a member of Prentiss Church of God and liked to hunt and fish.

Mr. Hudson is survived by a son, Lee Hudson and wife Jen of Brooksville, Fla.; his companion, Kim Bateman of Franklin, NC, and one grandchild.

Jessica Stilwell-CheekJessica Stilwell-Cheek

Jessica Stilwell-Cheek, 59, of Franklin, passed away Sunday, March 10, 2013.

Born in Orlando, FL, she was the daughter of the late Ernest Harvey Allen and Dianne Lee Belcher Allen. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth Allen. Jessica was very artistic and loved painting, needle point and crocheting. She loved the outdoors, especially fishing and exploring with her grandkids. Jessica was a member of Jehova’s Witness Kingdom Hall.

She is survived by two children, Jerry “Zeus” Stilwell and wife Tiffany and Christopher Shane Allen all of Franklin; two brothers, Jerry Allen of Wilmington, Del. and Rocky Allen of Franklin; three grandchildren, Victoria, Abigayle and Gabriel Stilwell and an aunt, Peggy Sanders and husband Junior of Franklin.

A Private Memorial Service will be held at a later date.

Betty Elaine Penland Coin

Betty Elaine Penland Coin, 91, of Franklin, passed away Sunday, March 10, 2013.

Born in Buncombe Co, she was the daughter of the late Oran Penland and Edna Randall Penland. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Coin, Jr. Betty was a Western Carolina University graduate and worked at Macon Middle School and Franklin High School for many years. She was an avid reader, a Carolina Tarheels and Atlanta Braves fan and animal lover. Betty was a member of First Methodist Church and enjoyed attending the Friday morning breakfast group at the Sunset Restaurant.

She is survived by two children, Oren Coin of Franklin and Lisa Elaine Coin of Fletcher and a grandson, Aaron Penland Coin.

Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 14, at First Methodist Church. Rev. David Beam will officiate. Burial will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Stephen Ralph Turner

Stephen Ralph Turner, age 67, of Franklin, passed away Monday, March 11, 2013. Born in Lee County, Fla. he was the son of Ray Turner of Franklin and the late Mary Etta Hawkins Turner. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and loved to spend time with his friends. He was a jeweler and liked to hunt and fish; work in his garden, and grow grapes and goats.

Mr. Turner is survived by his wife of 26 years, Drucilla Ann Davis Turner; one daughter, Stephanie Letourneau and husband Mike of Ft. Myers, Fla.; one son, Steven Turner, Jr. of Tampa, Fla.; a step son, Charles Beechley and wife Judy of Franklin, N.C.; two sisters, Sandy Turner and Lee Willis and husband Michael of Franklin, N.C.; five grandchildren, Lindsay, Derrick, Tucker, Whitney and Garrett, a niece, Erin and a nephew, Ray also survives.

Raymond Anthony Monzione, 87, of Franklin, passed away Thursday, March 7, 2013.

Harold Lewis DornHarold Lewis Dorn

Harold Lewis Dorn, 96, died on March 5, 2013 in Hospice care at Highlands Hospital. He had been living at Chestnut Hill Retirement Center since May 2009 after a serious accident.

Born on December 27, 1916 in South Miami, Fla., he was the eldest child of Harold Wesley & Mabel White Dorn, South Dade County pioneers who moved there from Chicago in 1913. From 1947 they were Highlands summer residents.

Graduating from the University of Miami in 1941, Lew went into the U.S. Navy at the beginning of World War II. He was a Naval Intelligence Officer on the flagship Enterprise in the Pacific Theater during most of the war and advanced to the rank of Commander. After the war, he continued in the Naval Reserve until retiring as a Captain in 1982. At that time he moved his residence from Miami to Highlands, next door to the family summer cottage.

During his earlier years, Lew worked at his father’s tropical fruit shipping company. Afterward, he had a varied career reflecting his many interests: In the 1960s he was involved with the Dade County Youth Fair; during the 1970s he was Director of the Museum of Science in Miami. He was also the founder & editor of The Village Post, a local South Miami editorial & cultural weekly newspaper. He later worked for Joe Hill Nursery in the plant nursery trade. He was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity, the Kiwanis Club in South Miami, and was a Mahi Shriner. His life long hobbies included tropical plants, reading, politics, Oriental collectibles and classical music.

After moving to Highlands, he was employed by his friend Ralph deVille at The Stone Lantern for over 25 years, retiring after his accident at the age of 92. Always active, his extracurricular activities in Highlands included a position as Co-Chair of the Local Chapter of the Western North Carolina Alliance in the 1980s. And true to his appreciation of classical music, he was a founding member of the Highlands Chamber Music Festival. Lucas Drew, the founding director, was quoted as saying "Lew was a loyal supporter of the Chamber Music Festival from its earliest concerts. He helped in so many ways, from putting the program together to ticket sales. He was a true music lover."

Lew was also a member of the Highlands United Methodist Church where a celebration of his life took place on March 9, 2013.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 brothers, Philip and Kenneth of South Miami, an aunt, Mary Wheeler Dorn of South Miami and Highlands, and a niece, Katherine Dorn Evans of Dahlonega, Ga. He is survived by a sister and long time summer resident, Alice Dorn of Central, SC; nieces, Pamela Dorn Brown of Highlands, Kristin Davenport Koepenick, Decatur, Ga & a summer resident; cousins Suzanna (Norman) Mosely of Highlands, and Robert (Evy) Buzzell of Groton, MA, also a summer resident. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and other cousins in Ga, Conn., Fla. & Wash.

Judy Galdon

Judy Galdon, 54 years old, died Friday, March 1, 2013. Judy took her own life after a life-long struggle with alcoholism. She was born April 26, 1958 in Galveston, Texas. She grew up in Gamboa, Canal Zone, Panama, Central America.

Judy was a graduate of Decatur High School in Georgia. A life-long chef with a fine understanding of food, Judy was also a skilled wood carver and an artist in several mediums. She loved camping and being with nature. She was a past resident of Highlands, and lived in Doraville, Georgia for the last five years. Judy is survived by her sister Nancy Arias of Doraville. Judy, with her amazing talents and great sense of humor, will be missed dearly.

Estella McCall JenkinsEstella McCall Jenkins

Estella McCall Jenkins, 86, of Franklin, passed away Friday, March 8, 2013.

Born in Macon County, she was the daughter of the late James Charlie McCall and Effie Ellen McCall. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald Jenkins who died May 21, 2005; brother, James Arthur McCall and two sisters, Jessie Mae Browning and Leona Ray. Estella enjoyed sewing, knitting and crocheting and was a member of Mashburn Branch Baptist Church.

She is survived by two children, Terry Ronald Jenkins and wife Elizabeth and Vickie Mashburn and husband Alvin all of Franklin; four sisters, Viola Jenkins Mary Owens and Martha Crescenzi all of Franklin and Frances Zachary of Highlands and; two brothers, Lloyd McCall and Leroy McCall both of Franklin; five grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Service was held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, March 11, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Vic Greene and Rev. Wiley Gibson officiated. Burial was in the Mount Moriah Cemetery, Highlands.

Pallbearers were Charles Mashburn, Bradley Collins, James Jenkins, Shannon Jenkins, Eric Jenkins and Sara Jenkins. Wesley Mashburn, Kyle Collins and Garrett Jenkins served as Honorary Pallbearers.

Pauline Bates Martin

Pauline Bates Martin, 87, of Long Beach, Calif., formerly of Franklin, passed away Friday, March 1, 2013.

Born in Macon County on August 18, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Samuel Napoleon and Mary Angie Shook Bates. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a grandson; a great granddaughter and her ten brothers and sisters, Ida Tallent, Boyd Bates, Barnette Bates, Dock Bates, Grady Bates and Grace Stamey (twins), Dollie Cowart, Gordia Smiley and Gordon Bates (twins), and Omie Bell. Pauline was the last surviving sibling.

She is survived by five children, Eugene Sanders of Gastonia, NC, Wayne Sanders of Westminster, Calif., Paulette Haynes of Heath Springs, SC, Ken Grant Sr. of Bellflower, Calif. and Sandy Grant Martinez of Long Beach, Calif.; twelve grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren; many beloved nieces and nephews and many extended family members and friends.

A Funeral Service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 9, at Beech Avenue Baptist Church in Gastonia, NC. Burial was in Hollywood Cemetery.
