Elsie Rae Curtis BrendleElsie Rae Curtis Brendle

Elsie Rae Curtis Brendle, 89, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Monday, April 29, 2013. Born in Macon County, she was the daughter of the late Charlie and Minnie McCall Curtis. She was married to Howard Theodore Brendle who died Sept. 21, 2010. She cooked for restaurants, did cleaning for Dr. Kahn, had worked for Van Raalte and had worked for Dr. McSween. She loved to cook and grow flowers, and was a member of Watauga Baptist Church.

She is survived by four daughters, Betty Wiley of Oakboro, N.C., Gladys Lockler of Charlotte, N.C., Linda Delaney and her husband Gary of Cornelia, Ga., and Cathy Pierce and her husband Chris of Locust, N.C.; a son, Jimmy Scroggs and his wife, Gayle of Waterford, Mich.; three sisters, Judy Carpenter and Barbara Bradley both of Franklin, and Pauline Lovell of Elizabeth City, N.C.; three brothers, Charles Curtis, Jr. of Sylva, N.C., Jimmy Curtis of Simpsonville, S.C. and Verlin Curtis of Franklin; 14 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Randall Garth Brendle; two sisters, Christine Brabson and Catherine Cunningham, two brothers, Claude Curtis and Willie Curtis, two grandchildren, Kelly Pierce and Richard Little.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 1, in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home, with Rev. Roy Lowe, Rev. Vic Greene, and Rev. Wesley Price officiating. Burial was in Watauga Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were Tony Curtis, Kevin Seay, Travis Seay, Bill Mashburn, Jerry Guffey, Avery Brendle, Chris Pierce, Trevor Denton and James Greenwood.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Diamond Blackfan Anemia Foundation, Inc. in memory of Kelly Pierce, 20 Tracy Lynn Lane, West Seneca, New York 14224.

Wanda Tabor Nelson

Wanda Tabor Nelson, 73, of Bryson City, N.C., passed away on Tuesday, April 23, 2013.

Born in Swain County, she was the daughter of the late Verlin Clyde Tabor and Louise Welch Tabor. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John E. Nelson; infant son, Robert Zane Nelson and three brothers, Bernard, Clyde and Carroll Tabor. She was a member of Dan Springs Baptist Church.

She is survived by two daughters, Kathy Bennett and husband Ken of Bryson City and Shannon Bumgarner and husband Dane of Canton, N.C.; brother, Blake Tabor of High Point, N.C.; and two grandchildren, Zane Bennett and wife Caitlan and Ryan Bennett.

Funeral service was held Saturday, April 27, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Jim Cochran and Rev. Tim Barker officiated. Burial was in Tabor Cemetery.

James Edgar SharpJames Edgar Sharp

James Edgar Sharp, 85, of Cullowhee, N.C., passed away Thursday, April 25, 2013. He was born in Jackson County, the son of the late Herbert and Martha Wiggins Sharp. He was a retired electrician for Duke Energy; he loved the Atlanta Braves, and was a caddy master at Sapphire Country Club for a number of years. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of Cashiers Church of God. He was married to Vylena McCall Moffitt Sharp, who passed away in 1995.

He is survived by his step-children, Azilea Fugate of Cashiers, Willean Stiwinter and her husband Jim of Cullowhee, N.C., Marvin Moffitt and his wife Judy of Cullowhee, and Cleamon Moffitt of Cashiers; 15 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and 35 great-great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two step-daughters, Mattie Moffitt and Irene Hughey; two step-sons, Junior Moffitt and Eugene Moffitt; a sister, Evelyn Carver; and three brothers, Ernest, Dewey and John Sharp.

Funeral services were held Saturday, April 27, at Cashiers Church of God, with Rev. Delbert McCall and Rev. Ned Pressley officiating. Burial was in Lower Zachary Cemetery. Pallbearers were Cliff Moffitt, Jamie Stiwinter, Randy Moffitt, Tony Moffitt, Blaine Teaster, and Todd Moss.

Billy Floyd HoustonBilly Floyd Houston

Billy Floyd Houston, 69, of Highlands, N.C., passed away Sunday, April 28, 2013. Born in Macon County, he was the son of the late Donald Gordon and Mary Elizabeth Rogers Houston. He was a caretaker; he liked gardening, cooking, hunting and fishing and liked to draw pictures of birds. He was of the Methodist faith.

He is survived by four sisters, Shirley Murphy and husband Tom of Westchester, Ohio, Betty Henry and husband Mickey of Highlands, Donna Houston of Highlands and Kathy McConnell and husband Don of Franklin, and four brothers, Wiley Houston and wife Diann of Franklin, Gary Houston and wife Patty of Highlands, Jimmy Houston of Highlands and Robert Houston and wife Sharon of Pickens, S.C.

Graveside services were held, Wednesday, May 1, at Buck Creek Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Jamie Passmore officiating. Pallbearers were Algie Bolick, Shawn Keener, Scotty Keener, Harold Ammons, David Leffler, Hunter Leffler and Ralph Rogers.

Robert William Hughes

Robert William Hughes, 76, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Sunday, April 28, 2013, in an Asheville hospital. Born in Hamilton County, Ohio, he was the son of the late William and Katherine Hughes. He was a truck driver for United Dairy Farmers.

He is survived by a daughter, Cathy Shook and husband Robert of Franklin; a son, Dale Wayne Hughes and wife Laura of Cincinnati, Ohio; a grandson, Travis William Shook and a great-grandson, Reed Sumner Shook.

No services are planned.

Hugh Dennis JustusHugh Dennis Justus

Hugh Dennis Justus, 66, loving father, grandfather and husband, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Tuesday, April 23, 2013. Born in Rabun County, Ga., he was the son of the late Webb D. and Mae Baker Justus. He was an accomplished carpenter and owned Justus Homebuilders. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy serving during Vietnam.

He is survived by his wife, Amy Berg Justus; two daughters, Sarah Adams and husband Steven of Franksville, Wisc. and Emily Justus of Franklin; one son, Ian Justus of Camarillo, Calif.; one sister, Barbara Strickland of Oakwood, Calif.; one brother, Howard Justus of Clayton, Ga., and two grandchildren, Ruth and Kaylee Adams both of Franksville, Wisc. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Jennifer Justus.

Memorial services were held Saturday, April 27, in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Josh Brooks officiating. Franklin VFW Post #7339 and American Legion Post #108 performed complete military rites.

Neville Clark

Neville Clark, 67, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Saturday, April 27, 2013.

Born in Macon County, he was the son of the late Joe and Annie Mae McCoy Clark. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Thad Clark and sister, Wanda Jarrell. He was a member of Black Mountain Baptist where he served as Adult Sunday School teacher and former building committee chairman. He was a farmer and cattle trader.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Annie Wykle Clark; son, Jeff Clark of Franklin; brother, Roy Clark of Franklin; father-inlaw, Willie Wykle of Franklin; niece, Tonja Clark and great niece, Casey Clark.

He was a loving husband and wonderful daddy. He was faithful to his family, his friends and his church. But most of all, he was faithful to the Lord. His wisdom, generosity, and sense of humor will be missed by all who knew him. He was truly a “good” man and heaven will be sweeter with him there.

Funeral service was held Tuesday, April 30, at Black Mountain Baptist Church. Rev. Cale Stancil, Rev. Ernie Jamison, Rev. Danny Cannon and Rev. Jamie Passmore. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were Elbert McConnell, Todd McConnell, David Price, David Mauck, Joe Sisti, Mark Bell, Curt Gentry, James Waldroop, Larry Tallent and Robert Moffitt.
