Susie Mashburn ShiersSusie Mashburn Shiers

Susie Mashburn Shiers, 73, of Annandale, Va., formally of Franklin, N.C., passed away Sunday, April 28, 2013. She was the daughter of the late Henry J. and Ruth Angel Mashburn. She was married to Alvin Shires who preceded her in death. She was employed for many years at the V.A. hospital in Oteen, and also at the V.A. hospital in Virginia.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Joe, Richard, and Johnny Mashburn and a sister, Frances Mashburn Morrison. Surviving are two sisters, Betty Moffitt and Edna Burnette of Asheville, N.C.; three brothers, Jack and Wayne Mashburn of Franklin, and Gene Mashburn of Dothan, Ala.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, May 11, at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. David Duncan and Rev. Andy Cloer officiating. Burial will be in Patton United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday, May 11 from 1 to 2 p.m., one hour prior to service.

Lillian HurstLillian Hurst

Lillian Hurst, 75, passed away Tuesday, April 30, 2013. She was born in Bergen County, N.J., the daughter of the late John and Lillian Ventricelli Buglino. She was a kitchen supervisor in a deli, she loved making crafts and working crosswords puzzles. She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and attended the Catholic Church.

She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Dennis Lee Hurst. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Lisa Kilgore, who died in 1976, and a brother, John Buglino.

Funeral services were held Friday, May 3, in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Father Tien Duong officiating. Entombment was at Woodlawn Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Macon County Humane Society, PO Box 81, Franklin, NC 28744.

Janice Leavitt KingJanice Leavitt King

Janice Leavitt King, 54, of Franklin, passed away on Friday, April 19, 2013.

Born in Kansas City, Mo., she was the daughter of the late Joseph Grant Leavitt and Earnestine Leavitt. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Kimberly Marie Wilburn and sister, Margaret Morehead. She was a loving mother and always put others before herself. She enjoyed camping and going to yard sales.

She is survived by four sons, Sean S. King, Krispher Eric Prince, Anthony Dean Abrams and Nicholas Matthew Hennequin, all of Franklin; sister, Jean Bruce, brother-in-law, Carl Bruce and niece, Melissa Bruce, all of Orlando, Fla.; sister, Ruth Deese and sister-in-law, Anne Irvine both of Asheville; brother, Tom Deese and sister-in-law, Debbie Deese both of Gainesville, Fla.; nephew, Nick Deese of Miami, Fla.; niece, Leah Deese of Gainesville, Fla. and grand-niece, Ava Deese of Miami, Fla.

Russel Stephen SaporitoRussel Stephen Saporito

Russel Stephen Saporito, 70, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Saturday, May 4, 2013, after a two year battle with cancer.

Born in Queens, N.Y., he was the son of the late Louis and Teresa Arcario Saporito. He graduated from Oceanside High School, was a U.S. Army veteran and retired from AT&T and Smoky Mountain Systems. He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church and a member of the Toastmasters. He enjoyed woodworking and flower gardening. He loved his family and life. He had a positive outlook on everything.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Donna Russo Saporito; four children, Russel Saporito Jr. of Kentucky, Daniel Saporito and wife Tammy of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Christine Reynolds and husband Charlie of Franklin and Alison Higdon and husband Travis of Franklin; one brother, Robert Saporito of Stuart, Fla.; six grandchildren, Christopher, Krichton, Sadie, Catherine, Carah and Brady and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 9, at St. Francis Catholic Church. Father Tien Duong will officiate. Burial will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the VFW Post 7339 and the American Legion Post 108.

Pallbearers will be Charlie Reynolds, Travis Higdon, Frank Russo, Daniel Saporito, Anthony Russo, Richard Russo and Robert Saporito, Jr.

Christopher Donnell Pharr

Christopher Donnell Pharr, 35, passed away Friday, May 3, 2013, at his residence in Asheville, N.C. He was born in Coweeta, Ga., the son of Joyce Cox of Franklin, N.C., and the late Kenneth Gary Pharr. He was computer sales and service for his own business Pharr Out PC. He was veteran of the U.S. Navy.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his life partner, Daniel Tillman and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his sister, Michelle Darlene Mynatt.

Dale Spencer Phillips

Dale Spencer Phillips, 76, of Franklin, passed away on Monday, May 6, 2013.

Born in Avery County, N.C., he was the son of the late Spencer and Ella Fae Woodring Phillips. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, George Phillips and Paul Allen Phillips and a sister, Barbara Brown. He was a member of Coweeta Baptist Church, where he served as trustee and usher. He enjoyed golf and woodworking.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Joanne McGuire Phillips; daughter, Dena Davis and husband Chuck of Elk Park, N.C.; two sons, Maurice Phillips and wife Grace and Ricky Phillips and wife Angie all of Franklin; brother, Glenn Phillips of Butler, Tenn.; three grandchildren, Daniel Davis, Mandy Taylor and Spencer Phillips; three great-grandchildren, Terri Davis, Jacob Davis and Mason Taylor; and several nieces and nephews. Memorial service was held Wednesday, May 8, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Davis Hooper and Rev. Frank Rodriquez officiated. Private burial was in the Woodlawn Cemetery.

Lu Ann WeigelLu Ann Weigel

Lu Ann Weigel, 56, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Wednesday, April 30, 2013, after a short battle with cancer. She was born in Burlington, Iowa, the daughter of Mary Neff Larson of Franklin, N.C., and the late Keith Edward Lite. She was a landscaper, and loved photography, gardening and flowers. She was a loving wife, mother, daughter and grandmother, sister and a very caring person. She attended Hickory Knoll United Methodist Church.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband of 26 years, George Weigel; daughter, Jennifer McFatridge and her husband Noah of St. Anne, Ill.; step-daughter, Jan Zaharias and her husband, John of Valpariso, Ind.; two step-sons, Jerry Weigel and his wife Susan and Joe Weigel and his wife Julie of Franklin; a sister, Linda Weigel and her husband Gary of Aurora, Ill.; three grandchildren; Chase Hakala, Keith Hakala, and Charlotte McFatridge; seven step-grandchildren, Nicholas Zaharias, Kennin Zolfer, Stephanie Calabro, Rebecca Weigel, Casey Weigel, Rebecca Joyce, and Heather Scott. She was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, June Scott and a brother, Donald Lite.

Memorial services were held Monday, May 6, in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home, with Pastor Paul Sears officiating.

Joseph “Joe” Garrell Woodard, 70, of Lawndale, N.C., passed away on Sunday, May 5, 2013. Born in Macon County, he was the son of the late William Robert Woodard and Nina B. Brooks Woodard Peek. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Shirley Guyer and a brother, Jackson Earl Woodard. He was a retired superintendent in road construction; attended Carpenter Grove Baptist Church, Lawndale, was a member of the Moose Lodge and loved to fish.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Stewart Woodard; three children, Joseph Garrell Woodard Jr. of Montana, Steven G. Wilson of California and Richard G. Woodard of Charlotte, N.C.; stepdaughter, Tonka and Jody Posey of Candler, N.C.; two brothers, William Hoyt Woodard and wife Garnetta of Candler, and Edward Cleveland Woodard of Bryson City, N.C.; one grandson, Dylan Posey and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 9, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Jerry Welch and Rev. Chris Hall will officiate. Burial will be in the Riverview Methodist Church Cemetery.
