Joan Mary MarchandJoan Mary Marchand

Joan Mary Marchand, 70, of Franklin, passed away Tuesday, June 4, 2013.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Joseph Ebert and Rita Charwinsky Ebert. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Marchand and brother, Richard Ebert.

She is survived by her longtime companion, James P. Gregory Sr. of Franklin; two children, Andrea Weatherby of Seminole, Fla. and Michael Marchand of Long Island, N.Y.; six step-children; two grandchildren, Richie Weatherby and Brianna Baver, and seven step-grandchildren.

Memorial donations can be made to the Macon County Humane Society, PO Box 81, Franklin, NC 28744.

Tisha Eileen Fawley CrayTisha Eileen Fawley Cray

Tisha Eileen Fawley Cray, 62, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Tuesday evening, June 4, 2013. She was the daughter of the late Leon Fawley of Indiana and Loyola Lamouettee of North Carolina. She was born in Fort Wayne, Ind., on Aug. 19, 1950. She was the loving wife of Richard Leigh Cray of Connecticut, who preceded her in death, July 10, 2008. They were married for 35 years.

She was a long-time resident of Connecticut, where she worked as a CNA at Whitewood Manor for many years. She later went on to work privately for Joy Minervini, prior to moving to North Carolina. She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Sylva, N.C.

She is survived by her dad, Robert Lamouettee of Whittier, N.C.; two daughters, Veronica Krampitz of Connecticut, and Christina Brunkhorst of Montana; son, Jason Cray of Texas; sister, Delores Young of Sylva, N.C. ; three brothers, Tom Fawley of Indiana, Larry Fawley of North Carolina and Steven Fawley of California; 11 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be private.

Appalachian Funeral Services is assisting the family with arrangements.



Fern Elizabeth Smith

Fern Elizabeth Smith, 93, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Tuesday, June 11, 2013.

Born in Traill County, N.D., she was the daughter of the late John Oscar Sathra and Martha Larson Sathra. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Smith; a sister, Margaret Lasher; and three brothers, John, Alan and Hillis Sathra. She enjoyed gardening and crocheting. She loved nature and bird-watching and enjoyed hiking to the area’s many waterfalls.

She is survived by her son, Paul Smith of Gainesville, Fla.; sister, Jeannette Pechuman of St. Paul, Minn. and a brother, Ralph Sathra of Levitown, Pa.

An informal service was held Wednesday, June 12, at Emmanuel Baptist Church. Rev. Josh Helton officiated.

Catherine Ann ‘Kitty’ Drengwitz

Catherine Ann”Kitty” Drengwitz, 87, of Franklin, passed away on Saturday, June 8, 2013.

Born in Springfield, Ill., she was the daughter of the late James Marren and Mary Ryan Marren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Drengwitz who died July 25, 2008; brothers, John Marren and James Marren; sister, Margaret Marren and brother-in-law, Robert Drengwitz. She was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church and was active in the Republican Party.

She is survived by a sister, Mary Marren of St. Louis, Mo.; sister- in-law, Irene Woodrum of Athens, Ill. and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 13, at the St. Francis Catholic Church. Father Tien Duong will officiate. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery, Springfield, Ill.

Catharine BakerCatharine Baker

Catharine Baker, 95, of Weaverville, N.C., formerly of Franklin, N.C., passed away Friday, June 7, 2013 at the Brian Center Health & Rehabilitation in Weaverville, N.C. She was born in Jackson County, N.C., the daughter of the late Henry Vinegum. She was married to the late Woodrow Baker. She worked at People’s Department Store, at Burlington, VanRaalt and several restaurants in Franklin. She was a member of Franklin First Baptist Church.

She is survived by her daughter, Launa Ball and her husband, Jerry of Weaverville; her grandchildren, Darrin Ball and wife Dana of Mills River, N.C. and Shannon Hagan and husband Pat of Harrisburg, Pa.; her greatgrandchildren, Sydney Ducker, Tate Ducker, Nathan Ball and Rachel Ball.

Graveside services were held Sunday, June 9, at Woodlawn Cemetery with Dr. Robert Brown officiating.

Elmer C. McCallElmer C. McCall

Elmer C. McCall, 87, of Franklin, passed away Saturday, June 8, 2013.

Born in Dillard, Ga., he was the son of the late Frank McCall and Rosa Nix McCall. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Gladys Dendy, Lilly McCall, Lassie Norton, Margie McKinney and Pauline McConnell and two brothers, Carl and Hoyt and two infant brothers, Herbert and Harvey. He was a member of Cullasaja Assembly of God.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Madge Stanfield McCall; two daughters, Linda McCall Mc- Cabe of Franklin and Brenda McCall Manos of Queen Creek, Ariz.; half-sister, Judy Goorey of Tennessee; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was held Tuesday, June 11, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Alton Dendy officiated. Burial was in the Sugarfork Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Clyde McCall, Kevin McCall, Bill McConnell, Ryan McCabe, Justin Russell and Timothy Gholston.

Arcilla Woody Henry

Arcilla Woody Henry, 91, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Monday, June 10, 2013.

Born in Macon County, she was the daughter of the late Grover Woody and Allie Younce Woody. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thurman Henry; three brothers, Frank, Roby and Harry Woody and two sisters, Lois Farmer and Louise Smith. She loved to read and garden. She was a member of Burningtown Baptist Church, where she was involved in the home demonstration and other committees.

She is survived by three sons, James “Pratt” Patrick Henry and wife Cora, Harry M. Henry and wife Mary, and Nat Henry and wife Becky all of Franklin; sister, Rosa Lee Barnes of Canton, Ga.; four grandchildren, Keith, Shawn, John, Henry and Patricia Wall and three great-grandchildren, Breanna, Trevor and Kaylee.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 14, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Randy Drinnon will officiate. Burial will be in Burningtown Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. The family will also be receiving friends and taking calls at the home, at 747 Younce Creek Rd.

Pallbearers will be John Henry, Keith Henry, Shawn Henry, Dustin Pendergrass, Tom Smith and Trevor Wall.

William H. ‘Bill’ Evans

William H. “Bill” Evans of Franklin, N.C., passed away June 10, 2013. Born in Calhoun, Ga., to Claude Sutherland and Maggie Rosa Brown Sutherland.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his adoptive parents Leon and Neel Evans, his brother Dave Sutherland and grandson Gabriel Ian Smith.

He was passionate about preserving Native American sites. He worked diligently in Macon County, preserving burials, the mounds and all historical sites. He also loved shuttling hikers and exchanging stories. He will be missed by all.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Pamela Evans; two daughters, Lindsay Evans Smith and husband Josiah Smith of Pocatello, Idaho, Angela Evans of the home; two sons, Jeff Evans and Billy Evans of Atlanta, Ga., grandchildren, Aiyana and Gabriella Evans of the home, Beckham Sleight and Ava Smith of Pocatello, Idaho.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
