Christy Taylor Downs, 35, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2013.

Born in Macon County, she was the daughter of Perry Taylor and Alice Holland Taylor. She graduated from Franklin High School in 1996. She loved sewing, crocheting, farming, gardening and poetry. She was a member of Franklin Church of God.

She is survived by her husband of 17 years, Jeff Downs; two daughters, Nicole Downs and LeAnne Downs both of the home; brother, Clinton Taylor of Franklin; grandmother, Frankie Henry Taylor of Franklin; mother-in-law, Vivian Lambert Downs; father-in-law, Lee Roy Downs; sister-in-law, Angie Vaughn and husband David all of Franklin; three nephews, Adam, Andrew and Austin Vaughn and several aunts and uncles.

Funeral service was held Friday, Aug. 23, at Franklin Church of God. Rev. Thurman Jenkins, Rev. Phillip Cochran and Rev. Eugene Moore officiated. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Travis Taylor, David Vaughn, Brian Crupi, Dexter Vinson, Kevin Watson and David Hastings. Dewayne Isaacs, Joel Holland and Mark Rogers served as honorary pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Duke Transplant Center, 330 Trent Drive, Hanes House, RM 220, Durham, NC 27710.

Eugenia SpurlockEugenia Spurlock

Eugenia Spurlock, 79, of Highlands, N.C., passed away Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2013, at a Highlands-Cashiers Hospital. Born in Aiken, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Clinton and Rosa Green Hall. She was married to the late Willie Benjamin Spurlock, Sr. who passed away in 1998. She was a dietician at the Highland-Cashiers Hospital. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a member of Heady Mountain Baptist Church.

She is survived by three daughters, Hazel Spurlock Webb of Clarksville, Ga., Nancy Spurlock Webb of Hendersonville, N.C. and Carolyn Spurlock Reynolds of Weaverville, N.C.; three sons, David Spurlock-Trantham of Tuckasegee, N.C., Willie Benjamin Spurlock Jr. and Clifton Kenneth Spurlock both of Highlands; two sisters, eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Luke Spurlock.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 24, in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home in Highlands with the Rev. Johnny Norris officiating. Burial was at Greens Creek Cemetery. Clarence Webb, Albert Webb, William Webb, Mike Franks, Jerry Trantham and Jamie Shuler served as pallbearers.

Janice Amelia Miller HendersonJanice Amelia Miller Henderson

Janice Amelia Miller Henderson, 76, of Franklin, N.C., passed away peacefully in her sleep, Thursday, Aug. 21, 2013, at a local nursing center. She was born in Macon County, the daughter of the late Dover Howard and Frankie Virginia Tallent Miller. She was a supervisor for Burlington Industries. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and loved gardening, flowers and mowing the lawn.

She is survived by her husband of 24 years, Charles Lester Henderson; her daughter, Ellen Kaye McCall Plemmons of Franklin; step-daughters, Tammy Miller and husband Jonathon of Lakemont, Ga., and Rhonda McCarthy and husband James McCarthy II of Lawrenceville, Ga.; her son, Jerry Dan McCall and wife Janet of Franklin; three step-sons, Mike Henderson and wife April, Charlie Henderson and Leslie Henderson and wife Carol, all of Dillard, Ga.; seven sisters, Linda Garner and husband Lee, Judy Pickens, Connie Curtis and Gail Tallent and husband, Carroll all of Franklin, Lucille Punch of Denver, N.C., Betty Ramey and husband, Vaughn of Wiley, Ga., and Sue Owen and husband Tim of Hartwell, Ga.; one brother, Steve Howard Miller and wife Yvonne of Franklin; her special roommate at Macon Valley Care Center, Edna Boone; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, William Lenis McCall; her daughter, Teresa Ann McCall, and a sister, Dorothy Grant.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Aug. 25, in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. David Powell and Rev. Ronnie Branson officiating. Burial was at Woodlawn Cemetery. Mike Henderson, Charlie Henderson, Paul Dobbins, Lee Garner, Tim Owen and Vaughn Ramey served as pallbearers.

Betty Dann

Betty Dann, 82, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2013. Born in Waycross, Ga., she was the daughter of the late William Herrin and Rena Bennett Jones. She was married to Wayne O’Neal Dann who preceded her in death.

She was a homemaker and member of Ocoee Christian Church in Ocoee, Fla.

She is survived by two daughters, Sherrall Dann Applegate of Ocoee, Fla. and Betsy Dann Fusco of Winter Garden, Fla. and one son, Patrick Dann of Ocoee, Fla.

Services will be held at a later date at Ocoee Christian Church in Ocoee, Florida.

George Jackson Hedden

George Jackson Hedden, 74, of Franklin, N.C., passed away, Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2013. Born in Jackson County, he was the son of the late Howard and Ruby Stewart Hedden. He was service manager for Detroit Diesel; was a volunteer at CareNet, and worked the Franklin Flea Market for many years. He was a member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church where he was a deacon and led the discipleship class.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Sandra Farthing Hedden; three daughters, Avis Hayes of Atlanta, Ga., Jacqueline Yost and husband Charlie of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. and Sarah Wilson of Franklin; one son, Fred Wilson of Franklin; one sister, Willene Mason and husband Max of Niota, Tenn.; two brothers, Jim Hedden and wife Sue of Franklin, and Wendell Hedden and wife Sarah of Andrews; two sisters-in-law, Helen O’Neal and husband Robert and Paula Brooks and husband Larry all of Otto; three grandchildren, Jonathan and Timothy Yost and Adam David Wilson and wife Jessica and one great-granddaughter, Avery Nova Wilson.

A service in celebration of his life was held Sunday, Aug. 25, at Ridgecrest Baptist Church with Rev. Tommy Fouts and Rev. Marlin Keener officiating.

Dorothy Ann Dodd

Dorothy Ann Dodd, 92, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Sunday, Aug. 25, 2013. Born in DeKalb County, Ga., she was the daughter of the late Charles A. and Ada McDougal Dean. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert C. Dodd, Sr.

She was a bookkeeper for a gasoline company; she was an artist and painted beautiful pictures and sang with The Sweet Adelines for 50 years.

She is survived by a son, Robert C. Dodd Jr. of Franklin and a granddaughter, Sarah Dodd-Verizzo of Sarasota, Fla.

Memorial services will be held at a later date at St. David’s Episcopal Church in Cullowhee, N.C.
