Jay Lloyd StameyJay Lloyd Stamey

Jay Lloyd Stamey, 87, of the Ellijay Community passed away Thursday, Oct. 17, 2013. Born in Gastonia, N.C., he was the son of the late Nelson Virgil and Marie C. Cook Stamey. He was employed by Macon County Supply and the Macon County School System; he enjoyed electronics, feeding birds, telescopes, riding his golf cart and taking care of his cat. He was a member of Higdonville Baptist Church where he was on the church building committee.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Hazel Bernice Moses Stamey; two step-daughters, Rebecca Powers; Sonja Vanhook and husband Dennis all of Franklin; one step-son, Dennis Nelson Stamey and wife Terry of Franklin; two brothers, Gene Stamey and wife Jean, and Fred Stamey and wife Marilyn, all of Franklin; four step-grandchildren; four step-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Dennis and Johnny Stamey.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Oct. 20, in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Roy Lowe officiating. Burial was at Higdonville Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were Denver Higdon, Bo Higdon, Tim Higdon, Larry Moses, Randy Rogers and Morris Stamey.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Macon County Humane Society, PO Box 81, Franklin, NC 28744.

Charles “Charlie” Robert Patterson, 91, of Franklin, N.C., passed away Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2013.

Services will be announced at a later date.

Mildred Eileen McGuireMildred Eileen McGuire

Mildred Eileen McGuire, age 90, a long-term resident of Macon County, passed away Friday, Oct. 18, 2013. She was born in Homestead, Fla., the daughter of the late Lyle and Clara Whippo Field. She was married to the late Donald Charles McGuire. She was a cashier at Ingles and was of the Methodist faith. She was a U.S. Navy Veteran serving during WWII and the Korean Conflict. She was a member of the American Legion Post #108.

She is survived by a daughter, Maureen McGuire of Mooresville, N.C.; five sons, Mark McGuire and his wife, Kathy of Asheville, N.C., Michael McGuire and his wife Phyllis of Cornelius, N.C., Tim McGuire, and Ronnie McGuire and his wife Angie of Franklin, and Rodney McGuire and his wife Sandra of Mooresville; a sister, Margaret Kirkwood; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Dan McGuire.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct. 26, in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Tim Whittington officiating. Burial will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery where the Franklin VFW post #7339 and the American Legion post #108 will perform complete military graveside rites.

The family will receive friends Friday, Oct. 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bryant-Grant Funeral Home.

William ‘Scotty’ HilesWilliam ‘Scotty’ Hiles

William “Scotty” Hiles, 88, of Franklin, formerly of Miami, Fla., passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2013.

Born in Westmoreland County, Pa., he was the son of the late Harry G. Hiles and Edna Jane Scott Hiles. He was a U.S. Army veteran and served during WWII. He worked as a carpenter, systems analyst and public school teacher; was a member of the League of Women Voters, Friends of the Library, Democratic Party and the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. He enjoyed woodworking and gardening.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Dorothy “Dotty” Billups Hiles; two daughters, Linda Brown of Miami, Fla. and Janet Hiles of Coral Gables, Fla.; three grandchildren, Angela Gicewicz, Teresa Vaughan and Daniel Rodriguez; three great grandchildren, Jenna Gicewicz, Teddy Gicewicz and Rebecca Vaughan and several cousins.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Thelma L. HogsedThelma L. Hogsed

Thelma L. Hogsed, 84, of Canton, Ohio, passed away on Monday, Oct. 21, 2013. She was born Dec. 15, 1928, in Macon County, North Carolina, to the late Claude and Leona Sanders. She retired from the Hoover Company in 1988 after 20 years of service. She was a member of the Canton Baptist Temple and Ambassador Class.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brothers, James D. Sanders and Ronald R. Sanders.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Jim; sons, Tony (Mary) Hogsed of Charlotte, N.C., and Rick (Debbie) Hogsed of Canton; daughter, Linda (Michael) Lewis of Gahanna, Ohio; five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; brothers, Leonard C. Sanders of Macon County, Charles C. Sanders of Sylva, N.C., John J. Sanders of Macon County, and Thomas B. Sanders of Little Rock, Ark.

Visitation will be held Thursday, Oct. 24, in the Reed Funeral Home, North Canton Chapel, 801 Pittsburg Ave. NW, from 10 to 11 a.m. with funeral service to follow at 11 a.m. with Rev. Delaney Young officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunset Hills Burial Park.

James Roy SmithJames Roy Smith

James Roy Smith, 56, of Hamlet, N.C., formerly of Franklin, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 13, 2013.

Born in Macon County, he was the son of Pat Cantrell Smith and the late James Ray Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth Smith. He graduated from Richmond Community College with honors. He worked as an electrician for many years; was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a member of Iotla Baptist Church.

He is survived by two daughters, Tracy Williams and husband Alvis of Greensboro and Tammy Ramirez and fiancé Thomas Terry, III of Rockingham, N.C.; three sisters, Anne Towell of Charlotte and Carol Peek and Linda Waldroop both of Franklin; four grandchildren, Hailey Williams, Travis Williams, Les Davis and Thomas Terry IV and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was held Friday, Oct. 18, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Dr. Jeff Hensley and Rev. Steve Reeves officiated. Burial was in the Snow Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Ronnie Jones, Mike Simmons, Freddy Raby, Bill Stewart, Mike Tallent and Derek Jones.
