Starting Monday, Aug. 19, Southwestern Community College will offer its fall real estate pre-licensing course in the Groves Building on the Macon Campus in Franklin.

The course will be held on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6-8:15 p.m. and will prepare students to take the North Carolina real estate exam to become a licensed agent. The in-state tuition for the course is approximately $375 and the cost of the textbook is approximately $40. The course will run through early December.

Venture Local Franklin's Cash Mob movement continues to grow as 45 mobsters joined in for the July Cash Mob at Kitchen Gourmet on Main Street.

With the pledge of spending just $20, mobsters of all ages filled the aisles of the store and made purchases to help in VLF's mission of supporting a locally owned business.

As part of the Cash Mob philosophy, Kitchen Gourmet agreed to "pay it forward" by donating 10 percent of the profits made during the mob to the Franklin Garden Club.

Angel Medical Center celebrated its 90th birthday last Friday by inviting members of the community into the facility for supper, tours, and fun. Outside, there was an inflatable jumping pit for kids with music filling the background. Inside, visitors could go to information tables offering services such as blood pressure and blood sugar checks. Others were able to provide smiles and laughs by painting the faces of anybody willing to sit down in the chair.

The Macon County News has won the 2013 News Media Award First Place at The American Legion Department of North Carolina’s annual convention held in Raleigh last month.

American Legion Post 108 Commander Scottie Thomas presented the award to Publisher Betsey Gooder and Editor Teresa Tabor.

Post members nominated MCN for the award and the winner was announced at the convention.
