As part of the Venture Local Franklin (VLF) initiative, Macon County News is teaming up with VLF to highlight local businesses throughout Franklin. Periodically, MCN selects locally owned and operated businesses in a different category. It is our goal at MCN to work with VLF to encourage residents to shop locally and utilize the resources Franklin has to offer.

No doubt about it, food is the gateway to the soul. Food helps create the identity of a community, and Macon County certainly has its share of one-of-a-kind eateries. From specialty themed diners like the Motor Company Grill on Main Street to eclectic ethnic cuisine like Sakura Japanese restaurant on the Highlands Road, Macon County's restaurants offer a little bit of everything.

The Franklin Chamber of Commerce’s Alive After Five monthly networking event took place at Outdoor 76 last Thursday evening.

The public was invited to attend and enjoy live music, appetizers, free beer from the new Rock House Lodge, door prizes, 20 percent off of clothing and footwear, and a $100 gift card giveaway.

The Cajun Connection Cafe took top honors at Taste of Southern Highlands held in Hiawassee, Ga., last week at the Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds.

Approximately 200 guests braved the afternoon weather to enjoy this annual event which serves as a fund raiser for the Towns County Schools Family Connections program. Area restaurants, wineries and other food vendors are invited to participate and bring samples of their fare for a “taste” and to compete for various awards, recognition, and trophies.

The Franklin Chamber of Commerce recently held a ribbon cutting to celebrate the expansion of Outdoor 76 to their bigger and better location at 35 E. Main Street in downtown Franklin. Owners Rob Gasbarro and Cory McCall are a vital part of the success of this new community-minded business on Main Street.

“We are all things outdoors. Our shop is a gateway for locals and visitors to be outdoors. We're not just about selling outdoor items” said Gasbarro. “We are also a true outfitter, offering everything from detailed area info on where to fish or hike, to paddling lessons and guided trips. We also offer kayaks, canoes, SUPs, and camping gear rentals.”
