Two years after Macon County residents pleaded with the board of commissioners to bring a dialysis facility to the community, the fruit of their labor was finally realized Thursday afternoon.

Citizens, elected officials, and medical professionals packed the new DaVita Dialysis Center in the Westgate Plaza from wall to wall to welcome the new and much needed facility to Franklin.

“Learn and earn” facility has more work than space.

Webster Enterprises, located in Jackson County, provides employment opportunities for individuals who have disabilities or financial disadvantages in Jackson, Macon, and Swain counties.

In the three counties Webster serves, the disabled population is estimated at 10,000 individuals. Through the work program at Webster Enterprises, those individuals are given a chance to gain real life work experience in hopes of seeking long-term employment in the work force.

Drake Software, a leading national supplier of professional tax preparation software, is expanding their call center in Hayesville. A new 10,000 square feet facility will be constructed in the Clay County Industrial/Technology Park and is expected to open in January 2014.

Drake Software currently operates a call center in downtown Hayesville. The construction of a new call center will allow Drake to hire approximately 50 additional customer service representatives and make Drake Software one of the largest private employers in Clay County. As with the current Hayesville call center, the new building will be linked to the already established call centers in Franklin and Sylva and provide access to the same benefits and resources.

Last Saturday, Venture Local Franklin held its 10th Cash Mob. With growing momentum, 45 mobsters met at the clock tower early Saturday morning before descending on Franklin's Farmer's Market.

Mobsters has three goals in mind, commit to spending $20 to provide a quick economic boost for the local vendors; meet three new people, a tremendous networking opportunity; and lastly, have fun!
