Angel Medical Center (AMC) is going to the dogs. Three pet therapy teams are spreading canine good will to patients, staff and visitors.
The first team on the scene was Kay and her King Charles Cavalier Spaniel, Karissa. Kay and Karissa not only visit the local hospital in Franklin but they also visit patients at Mission Hospital in Asheville. Kay’s husband is an emergency department physician who works at both hospitals. AMC partnered Kay and Karissa with Judi, a volunteer who assists them in the patients’ rooms. AMC’s pet therapy program captured the attention of Asheville television station WLOS when reporter Jay Siltzer did a TV story on the program recently.
Shortly after this team started, Angel Medical received calls from two additional pet therapy teams who wanted to volunteer. The hospital now has Susan and her Italian Water Dog, Lexi, who visit once a week. Joining them is Molly and her toy poodle, Sophie. Each team has a designated day that they come and visit. AMC is looking forward to expanding the pet therapy program even more in the future.
