Features Health & Wellness World Laughter Day: ‘Laughing for the health of it’

Cindy Miles, Laughter Yoga instructor led the assembled group in laughter therapy for a “complete well-being workout.” World Laughter Day is observed the first Sunday in May.World Laughter Day was observed in Franklin this past Sunday at the Big Bear Shelter in downtown Franklin with a free Laughter Wellness Session. Laughter Yoga has been featured on CNN, the Discovery Channel, the Oprah Winfrey Show, and numerous other national and international broadcasts. It is the health and wellness craze that is sweeping the globe. Cindy Miles of Franklin led the group in what was billed as “a complete well-being workout.”

Dr. Madan Kataria started the first laughter club in 1995, teaching people to laugh to alleviate stress in everyday life. Almost 3,000 laughter clubs operate around the world.

As a medical doctor, Dr. Kataria touts the physical and psychological benefits of laughter. “We don’t need doctors to tell us it’s good for us; we know it is,” he says. According to Dr. Kataria, even if you don’t feel like laughing, your body doesn’t know the difference if you fake it.

Various techniques are employed to get the giggles going. One is called the “lion laugh” which involved sticking out your tongue and flapping your hands by your ears.
