WestCare awards peer-nominated staff members monthly with the “ABCDE” award, which stands for “Above and Beyond the Call of Duty with Excellence.” Winners of the ABCDE award are recognized for an outstanding act in which they went above and beyond their normal work duties in caring for a patient or interacting with fellow staff members. Winners are selected through a voting process by the ESP (Every Single Patient) Council, which is made up of staff representing all work areas in the organization.
September’s ABCDE award was given to Kathy Wyder, RN who works in outpatient infusion at Harris Regional Hospital. Wyder was nominated by a fellow nurse for her outstanding efforts in caring for a cancer patient who was nearing the end of their life. Wyder not only cared for the patient physically, but did her best to make sure that both the patient and the patient’s family understood what was happening during the course of treatment. She stood by their side throughout the treatment process, and became truly invested until the end of the patient’s life. Wyder’s nominator also recognized Wyder’s dedication to her work and the positive attitude she consistently brings to WestCare and her work unit.
October’s ABCDE award was given to Jon Brown, Physical Therapist for WestCare Home Health. Jon was recently providing rehabilitation care to a Home Health patient who began discussing the 'full' peach tree she had in her yard. She shared that she had picked peaches off the tree in the past and had made many peach cobblers, but was now unable to do so because of her physical condition. After Jon finished the rehab session with the patient, he picked some of the peaches from her tree, took them home and made her a peach cobbler. When he delivered the fresh peach cobbler made with peaches from her tree, she was very happy and grateful.
In addition to the ABCDE award, a physician is also recognized each month for going above and beyond the call of duty. The winner of October’s Physician Recognition award is Dr. Charles Toledo with WNC Pediatric and Adolescent Care. Dr. Toledo was nominated for his calm and caring demeanor with patients and families, and his dedication to their care. Dr. Toledo always takes ample time with his patients and their parents, listening to their concerns and answering questions with patience and compassion.
“The ABCDE and Physician Recognition awards allow us to personify our deepest values here at WestCare,” said Janet Millsaps, Director of Service Innovation and Performance Management. “Each of our staff and physicians strive daily to provide a world class patient and family experience, and those nominated and awarded have contributed to that experience by going the extra mile, simply because they care.”
Staff may be nominated for the ABCDE award by peers or supervisors at any time through a secret ballot system, with boxes for ballots located in multiple places on both the Harris and Swain campuses.
WestCare Health System was formed through a partnership of Harris Regional Hospital and Swain County Hospital in 1997 and serves Jackson, Swain, Macon and Graham counties with primary and subspecialty care, outpatient facilities and urgent care.
