MedWest Health System has expanded its administrative leadership team, naming a chief medical officer to oversee medical staff activities for the three hospitals within the system.
Tyson Smith, M.D. most recently served as vice president for medical affairs at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Huntington, W.Va. At MedWest, he will oversee quality and performance improvement education and leadership development activities of the medical staff, which includes 230 physicians serving a five-county region.
“Dr. Smith’s knowledge and experience will be very beneficial for providing guidance in compliance and regulatory matters, and is a welcome addition to our leadership team,” said Mike Poore, president and CEO of MedWest Health System.
Prior to working at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Smith served as senior vice president for medical affairs and strategic planning at Cortland Regional Medical Center in Cortland, N.Y. He earned his medical degree from the University of Tennessee and completed his pathology residency at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia. He earned a law degree at Atlanta Law School and a master’s degree in business administration from Kennesaw State University in Kennesaw, Ga. He is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives.
Smith said he spent many summers in Western North Carolina as a child and is looking forward to returning to the mountains to work.
“My mother's Shields family was an original family in Cades Cove. My father was from Murphy, and both graduated from Western Carolina University,” he said.
Smith grew up in East Tennessee. He and his wife, Kathy, have five sons and one daughter. He will assume his new position at MedWest April 26.
