The American Red Cross is launching the Summer of Stories campaign to share the personal impact blood and platelet donors can have on a patient in need and to help ensure a sufficient blood supply is available in the months ahead.

Summer is a time for the days that never end. Time for diving in and grilling out. Time to watch the fireworks, to have a picnic, to root for the home team. While many have fun making these memories, hospital patients are counting on eligible donors to make time to give blood or platelets so they can continue making and sharing their own summer memories and stories.

Since 2011, Angel Medical Center has been in a management agreement with Mission Health and has now completed the process to become a full member hospital.

As a result of this conversion, AMC will extend its Mission Health membership benefits, building upon its existing advantages that include better volume-based pricing for supplies and services; participation in Mission Health's best-in-class quality improvement services, and inclusion in Mission Health's Great Places to Work and Practice initiative which is a national model that strives to create an outstanding work environment.

“When we began this journey nearly two years ago, our board wanted to partner with an organization that was as committed to Western North Carolina as we have been for 90 years,” said Jan Unger, chairman of Angel Medical Center's Board of Trustees. “Mission Health is an outstanding partner and healthcare provider. About 38 percent of the population is eligible to donate blood; however, only three percent actually do. The American Red Cross is encouraging individuals to join those who have stepped up to help save lives by donating blood or platelets with its spring promotion, “Just 3% do, will you?”

The Red Cross appreciates those who make it a priority to give blood and will offer a chance to win one of three $1,000 gift cards to presenting blood and platelet donors between April 1 and June 30, 2013.

“While only about three percent of the population donates blood, many of us will need blood at some point in our lifetime,” said Delisa English, chief executive officer, Carolinas Blood Services Region. “The Red Cross relies on volunteer donors to meet the needs of patients who depend on transfusions. It is important that our donors realize the impact they have on the lives of so many.”

These certifications were granted by 29 different certifying organizations, and 120 different credentials designate these certifications.
