World Laughter Day was observed in Franklin this past Sunday at the Big Bear Shelter in downtown Franklin with a free Laughter Wellness Session. Laughter Yoga has been featured on CNN, the Discovery Channel, the Oprah Winfrey Show, and numerous other national and international broadcasts. It is the health and wellness craze that is sweeping the globe. Cindy Miles of Franklin led the group in what was billed as “a complete well-being workout.”

Dr. Madan Kataria started the first laughter club in 1995, teaching people to laugh to alleviate stress in everyday life. Almost 3,000 laughter clubs operate around the world.

Hosted by Franklin's First Voice 1050 WFSC, local businesses came together last Friday for the 2013 Senior Expo at the Macon County community building. The Senior Expo and Health Fair is held each year as a free event to give community members the opportunity to take part in seminars and health screenings while enjoying free entertainment and refreshments.

“The Senior Expo and Health Fair is a community event put together by WFSC in conjunction with the Macon County Senior Games that originated back in 2007,” explained Sean Gibson, vice president and general manager of 1050 WFSC. “I thought the turnout was terrific. We had over 20 exhibitors providing some great information and some great displays.”

Citizens in Macon County officially have a new location to seek treatment when needing dental services. The Macon County Public Health Department has expanded the dental clinic options as the grand opening for the new adult dental facility was held last Thursday. More than 100 visitors stopped in to tour the new facility and about 70 participated in free health screenings. The clinic provides services for patients 18 and older.

The facility actually opened a few days prior to the ceremony. The new clinic, located at 108 Macon Center Drive, is a 2,000 square foot facility, more than twice as large as the last clinic.

During the month of April, the Macon County Public Health Center celebrated Public Health Month by recognizing a Public Health Hero. The objective of making this award is to broaden people’s awareness and understanding of the important role that public health plays in all of our lives.

The health center asked the public to submit nominations for individuals who had made an exceptional contribution toward promoting and protecting the health of citizens in Macon County. In addition, the nominees must have performed their services as volunteers without financial compensation.
