Summer has become synonymous with superhero blockbusters, but there’s no need for tights and a cape to be someone’s hero. The Red Cross is asking local citizens to “Find the Hero In You” by giving blood or hosting a blood drive. By supporting the Red Cross, anyone can be a hero to a neighbor in need of lifesaving blood.

“I want to thank our local heroes who make it a priority to give back by giving blood and hosting blood drives,” said Joyce Brendel, chief executive officer of the American Red Cross Carolinas Blood Services Region. “Summer tends to keep many donors away from blood donation centers and blood drives, but the Red Cross must be prepared to respond to patient emergencies with blood products.”

Painless procedure measures breathing

On Saturday, Aug. 4, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Angel Medical Center, along with all of Mission Health System, will be participating in the World Spirometry Day for the community. A Spirometry test shows how well you breathe and can help in the diagnosis of different lung diseases.

The test, itself, is painless and usually will take less than 10 minutes. It does require taking in a very deep breath and some hard blowing. The device you breathe into is called a spirometer, which measures the amount of air in your lungs and how fast you breathe out.

At the upcoming July 24, Ladies Night Out Program, the topic will be Substance Abuse. Directly or indirectly, every community is affected by substance abuse. Do you know what to do when it touches your life? Guest speaker will be Patti Tiberi, Substance Abuse Prevention Regional Coordinator, Smoky Mountain Center.

Ladies Night Out is a partnership between Macon County Public Health and Angel Medical Center to provide free monthly programs on a variety of health topics for women with an emphasis on the importance of regular health screenings. The Franklin Bi-Lo and Fatz of Franklin are corporate sponsors of the programs and provide snacks and door prizes each month.

Dr. Marc Jones completed a two year pediatric dental residency in June 2012 at Louisiana State University in affiliation with Children's Hospital of New Orleans, LA. He received extensive clinical, emergency and hospital training in addition to education on the growth and development of children, and the treatment of medically and physically compromised patients.

Dr. Jones is an active member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the America Dental Association. Dr. Jones has also participated with many community organizations to encourage the prevention of oral disease.

Dr. Jones is a 2000 graduate of Franklin High School. In 2004, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. In 2010, he graduated magna cum laude at Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine in Boston, MA to earn his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree.
