to cervical cancer services in North Carolina

A new online resource is available to help connect women and adolescents to life-saving cervical cancer-related services.

The NC Cervical Cancer Resource Directory ( includes county-specific information on where uninsured or underinsured women can go to find screening, or Pap test, services. The site also has information on HPV (human papillomavirus) vaccination, answers to frequently asked questions and additional resources.


Four nurses, Vicki Dalton, RN, Laura Doolittle, RN, Lyndie Cowan, RN, and Diane Stanley, RN, from Angel Home Health and Hospice recently completed a two-day ELNEC (End of Life Nursing Education Consortium) training course sponsored by The Charles George VA Medical Center. This specialty training specifically addresses the unique palliative care and end of life needs of veterans. Palliative care is interdisciplinary care for people with serious diseases, and focuses on working with patients and their families to manage complex symptoms, help them cope with the stress of illness, and improve their quality of life.


MedWest Health System is sponsoring a series of “Look Good … Feel Better” workshops in 2012 for women undergoing treatment for cancer.

The free workshops are American Cancer Society programs facilitated by trained cosmetologists and offered in partnership with the National Cosmetology Association, the Personal Care Products Council Foundation and Med-West-Harris hospital in Sylva.

Participants will learn how to care for changes in their skin and hair that may occur during medical treatment, and improve their overall self-image and appearance.


Getting books from the doctor will soon be a routine part of regular pediatric checkups at six medical practices in Region A. The Region A Partnership for Children is Partnering with Smart Start and Reach Out and Read® to make books and literacy guidance a reality for more children and families in Region A. The six new Reach Out and Read clinical locations join more that 4,779 programs nationwide that are preparing America’s youngest children to succeed in school.
