The Humane Society Thrift Store recently held its re-grand opening with a ribbon cutting to celebrate its new name, Appalachian Animal Rescue.

The Franklin Chamber of Commerce recently held a ribbon cutting to celebrate the opening of The Cowee Farmers Market located at the old Cowee School, now the Macon County Heritage Center, off NC 28N in Franklin. The Cowee Farmers Market will be open every Tuesday through October from 3:30 until 7 p.m. The market just opened mid-May, after much planning by community members.

Each week, local growers bring what’s ripe and ready. In addition to produce, there are plants and baked goods, wooden spoons and garden whirligigs, market bags and pottery, cider and lemonade. Local musicians provide entertainment and community organizations provide information and opportunity to join in their activities. A pet adoption day is planned with more to come. The market is both a local food source and community gathering place.

Kelly Donaldson is the new Assistant Director of the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center in Sylva.Kelly Donaldson, 42, of Cullowhee, N.C., has been named the new assistant director of the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce and Visitor’s Center, effective immediately.

Donaldson’s addition is part of a restructuring plan by the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center board of directors to plot a fresh new path for future growth in the area.

“Kelly will bring a new skill set and level of professionalism that our merchants, citizens and visitors will adore,” said Jackson County Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center Executive Director Julie Spiro. “We’re excited about the potential for growth within our chamber and community. Kelly will provide an invigorating level of staff support, event planning, growth of commerce, and visitor and community service to the chamber.”

Donaldson served seven years as editor at the Crossroads Chronicle in Cashiers; and seven years as a sports editor in Gainesville, Ga., Morganton, N.C., and Brevard, N.C. He has experience in marketing, public relations, photography, fundraising and graphic design.

Harris Regional Hospital will soon provide internship opportunities through Project SEARCH®, a national non-profit program which partners with businesses to create internships for young adults with disabilities. Southwestern Community College implemented Project SEARCH® in Jackson County and will partner with Harris Regional Hospital and several other local organizations to place interns beginning this fall.

Based in Cincinnati, Ohio, Project Search® allows men and women ages 18-30 with disabilities to gain marketable and transferrable employability skills through the implementation of hands-on work experience during a series of three separate, 10- week internships matched to their individual interests, strengths, and abilities. The nationwide program collaborates with many types of organizations; local Project SEARCH® partners will include the NC Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, Vocational Opportunities of Cherokee, and Smoky Mountain Center – Local Management Entity/ Managed Care Organization in addition to Harris Regional Hospital. Thanks to this program and its partnered businesses, these former students can make successful transitions from school into sustainable employment.
