Kelly Donaldson is the new Assistant Director of the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center in Sylva.Kelly Donaldson, 42, of Cullowhee, N.C., has been named the new assistant director of the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce and Visitor’s Center, effective immediately.

Donaldson’s addition is part of a restructuring plan by the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center board of directors to plot a fresh new path for future growth in the area.

“Kelly will bring a new skill set and level of professionalism that our merchants, citizens and visitors will adore,” said Jackson County Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center Executive Director Julie Spiro. “We’re excited about the potential for growth within our chamber and community. Kelly will provide an invigorating level of staff support, event planning, growth of commerce, and visitor and community service to the chamber.”

Donaldson served seven years as editor at the Crossroads Chronicle in Cashiers; and seven years as a sports editor in Gainesville, Ga., Morganton, N.C., and Brevard, N.C. He has experience in marketing, public relations, photography, fundraising and graphic design.


Harris Regional Hospital will soon provide internship opportunities through Project SEARCH®, a national non-profit program which partners with businesses to create internships for young adults with disabilities. Southwestern Community College implemented Project SEARCH® in Jackson County and will partner with Harris Regional Hospital and several other local organizations to place interns beginning this fall.

Based in Cincinnati, Ohio, Project Search® allows men and women ages 18-30 with disabilities to gain marketable and transferrable employability skills through the implementation of hands-on work experience during a series of three separate, 10- week internships matched to their individual interests, strengths, and abilities. The nationwide program collaborates with many types of organizations; local Project SEARCH® partners will include the NC Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, Vocational Opportunities of Cherokee, and Smoky Mountain Center – Local Management Entity/ Managed Care Organization in addition to Harris Regional Hospital. Thanks to this program and its partnered businesses, these former students can make successful transitions from school into sustainable employment.


A free workshop for owners of small businesses, “Navigating the Federal Grants Process,” will be offered Thursday, June 26, at Western Carolina University’s instructional site at Biltmore Park Town Square in Asheville.

The workshop is being sponsored by the N.C. Small Business and Technology Development Center and the Center for Rapid Product Realization at WCU’s Kimmel School of Construction Management and Technology.

A general session will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m., and one-on-one sessions will be offered to small business owners from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.


The Franklin Chamber of Commerce recently held a ribbon cutting at the Franklin Health and Fitness Center introducing Crossfit FHFC. The FHFC is located at 1214 East Main Street in Franklin.

Crossfit is a core conditioning program that has been around for years now and is used by the U.S. military, police academies, and professionals around the world. Crossfit is a program that encompasses physical preparedness for any tasks. FHFC trains in weight lifting, cardiovascular conditioning, gymnastics, Olympic lifting and other modalities. It is constantly varied high intensity functional movements. All new athletes are taught the mechanics and proper technique before they enter the groups. Safety is ensured before intensity and speed.
