Eva Christine Gregory Snipes

Eva Christine Gregory Snipes, 70, of Lariate Loop, Waynesville, N.C., passed away July 2, 2010, at John Keever Solace Center in Asheville, N.C. Born in Macon County, she was the daughter of the late George Washington Gregory and Stella Wood Gregory. She was a cook at Jim’s Drive-In. She was of the Baptist faith.

She is survived by two daughters, Debbie King of Sylva, N.C. and Barbara Thomas of Gainesville, Ga.; two sons, Dean Snipes of Dahlonega, Ga. and Don Snipes of Waynesville; two sisters, Gert Bagwell of Pickens, S.C. and Evelyn Bryant of Waynesville; three brothers, Hayes Gregory of Kentucky, Lonnie “Sonny” Gregory of Tennessee and Ronnie Gregory of Rockhill, S.C.; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren also survive. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Lorine Mashburn and Betty Gregory and one brother, Gilmer Gregory.

Funeral services were held Saturday, July 3, in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Garland Driver officiating. Burial was in Walnut Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to John Keever Solace Center, 68 Sweeten Creek Road, Asheville, NC 28803.

Naomi L. Rohlfing

Naomi L. Rohlfing, 58, of Franklin, passed away Thursday, July 01, 2010.

Born in Champaign, Ill., she was the daughter of Dean Newlin and the late Ruth Hinkle Newlin. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi and the Century Club. She enjoyed volunteering and was a dedicated volunteer at East Franklin Elementary School for 12 years. She was active in many social groups with her friends such as the Juliets, Cookie Club and Birthday Lunch Club. These friends were very special to her. She was a strong, caring and generous person with a wonderful sense of humor. She was well known for her tenacious spirit and big heart. She touched and inspired the lives of others and will be greatly missed.

She is survived by two daughters, Suzanne Windsor of Pineville, La. and Erica Lyall of Winston Salem; seven sisters, Susan Newlin, Phyllis Rohlfing, Dianna Keefer, Rachel Kreke, Beth Upton, Lora Cunnea and Clara Koester; three brothers, Wayne, Steven and Bruce Newlin; one grandson, Aidan Windsor and 16 nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday, July 10, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Maggie Pendergrass

Maggie Pendergrass, 78, of Franklin, passed away Thursday, July 1, 2010.

Born in Macon County, she was the daughter of the late Wiley Pendergrass and Vinnie Roper Pendergrass. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Viola Boyce and a brother, Lyman Pendergrass. She was a member of Mt. Sinai Assembly of God.

She is survived by her son, Steve Pendergrass and wife Tammy of Franklin; a sister; Sophia Holland of Franklin; three brothers, Robert Pendergrass of Rome, Ga., Jerry Pendergrass of Calhoun, Ga. and Urban Pendergrass of Canton, Ohio; four grandchildren, Eric Pendergrass, Tara Pendergrass, Renea Gibson and Steven Dills; seven great-grandchildren; one great- great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 5, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Barry Bowman and Rev. Johnny Raby officiated. Burial was in Tippett Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Kris Pince, Alan Mashburn, Mark Watson, Tracy Holland, Charlie Williamson and George Maynard.

Nellie Holbrooks Gibson

Nellie Holbrooks Gibson
Nellie Holbrooks Gibson, 89, of Franklin, passed away Thursday, July 1, 2010.

Born in Macon County, she was the daughter of the late Arthur Huggins and Ethel Welch Huggins. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Frank Holbrooks; second husband, Lex Gibson; a daughter, Helen Barrett and two sisters, Evelyn Fouts and Bedell Huggins. She loved to quilt; was a Sunday school teacher for many years; enjoyed caring for and provided health care for the elderly. She was a member of Mashburn Branch Baptist Church.

She is survived by two children, Carolyn Bell and husband Don of Franklin and Boyd Holbrooks of Franklin; sister, Ann Tallent of Franklin; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral service was held Sunday, July 4, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Ernie Sanders, Rev. Randy Drinnon and Rev. Cadon Fouts officiated. Burial was in the Burningtown Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Jeff Barrett, Jim Barrett, Mike Holbrooks, Jim Fouts, Jerry Tallent and Mark Doolittle.

Jimmy Alfred Clark

Jimmy Alfred Clark
Jimmy Alfred Clark, 67, of Franklin, passed away July 4, 2010.

Born in Macon County, he was the son of the late Woodrow and Launa Clark. He was a 1961 graduate of Franklin High School and worked at the Ford Motor Company in Michigan shortly after. He was a construction worker and an asphalt operator. Jim loved to travel and often made lasting friendships wherever he went. He was an avid reader and loved learning about history. He mostly enjoyed spending time with friends and family. We all are the better for having known him.

He leaves to cherish his memories, a wife, Gail Shope Clark; a daughter, Karen Wisman; one sister, Sally Seay; one brother, Rob Clark; two grandchildren, Sarah and Adam; several nieces and nephews and his beloved dog “Cooper”.

A Memorial Service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 7, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Steve Reeves will officiate.

Patricia C. Germain

Patricia C. Germain, 79, of Otto, passed away Saturday, July 3, 2010.

Born in Schenectady, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Walter Albert Christopher and Clara Darby Christopher. Patricia was a retired school teacher. She enjoyed golfing, bowling and playing bridge.

She is survived by three children, Christine Jason of Otto, Laurie Jay of Franklin and Jason Germain of Latham, N.Y.; one brother, Tom Christopher of N.Y.; 13 grandchildren; ten greatgrandchildren; one niece and one nephew.

Memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, July 9, at the home of Laurie Jay.
