John N. McClure John N. McClure, born June 1, 1913, in Beeson Works, Pa., died on Sunday, April 13, 2008, in Franklin, N.C. He will live on in the memory of his wife of 25 years, Marian Randel McClure, and his family, Gus and Michele McClure McMahon, Garrett and Addison McMahon Martin and their daughter, MacKenzie, Maqelle McMahon, Robin McClure Henry, Morgan Jennings, Gary and Pamela McClure Setser, Justin and Kara Setser, Felicia Contino, of Franklin, Sylva and Asheville, K.O. Randel Colonel, M.C. Retired of Sneads Ferry, N.C., and Mr. McClure’s sister, Bess G. Keefer of Waxhaw, N.C. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jayne Rush McClure, of Uniontown, Pa., his parents, Joseph and Bessie Gwendolyn LaClair McClure of Uniontown, Pa., and brothers Joseph Cameron, Ned LeClere, Harry, William Clark, Robert Rolland, and Jack Calvin. He moved to Franklin from Hollywood, Fla., in 1979, when he retired. He was a member of St. Agnes Episcopal Church. A hunter and gun enthusiast, he crafted fine gunstocks and grips and enjoyed reloading ammunition for his guns. He was talented in metal works of wrought iron, brass and other materials creating many unique things for friends and family. In 1954, he built a sports car with the body of a “reworked” 1949 Ford Coupe. For several years, he was a pit crewmember of the Briggs Cunningham Racing Team at the Sebring International Raceway in Sebring, Fla. In 1960, he built a telescope with tracking abilities so that he could study the skies and take pictures of the moon and planets. In 1999, he created a cannon that used a mixture of acetylene gas and oxygen to fire and he dedicated it to family friend, Brig. Gen. Joseph Watson, retired, long time city manager of Hollywood, Fla. It was fired to welcome in the millennium and on other festive occasions. The cannon, which is now on display at the Charles Hall Museum in Tellico Plains, Tenn., was the topic of an interview by John Boyle that appeared in The Asheville Citizens-Times. Louise Margaret Clark Louise Margaret Clark, 56, of Highlands, N.C., passed away Thursday, Feb. 21, 2008 at Highlands-Cashiers Hospital. She was a native of Essex County, New Jersey, the daughter of Walter Asseng, Jr., of Cliffwood Beach, New Jersey and the late Ruth Ziegler Asseng. She was a homemaker and was a volunteer at the hospital gift shop. She is survived by her husband of 25 years, Wayne Clark; two daughters, Ruthann Edwards of Rabun County, Ga. and Jennifer Hughes of Lexington Park, Md.; two sisters, Donna and Ellen and one brother, Walter; three grandchildren also survive. Larry Grayson Baldwin Sr. Larry Grayson Baldwin Sr., 64, of Franklin, passed away Tuesday, April 8, 2008.Born in Canton, Miss., he was the son of the late Owen William Baldwin and Margaret Rentz Baldwin. In addition, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Wicker Baldwin (1994). He was owner of the Baldwin Funeral Homes in Hinds County, Miss., until 1976 when he became a Mississippi State Highway Patrolman. He also worked for the Emergency Operations Center in Jackson, Miss. He retired to Destin, Fla. in 1986. He purchased Santa Rosa Beach Auto Repair in Santa Rosa Beach, Fla., in 1991. He was also a member of the Santa Rosa Beach Volunteer Fire Department. He remarried Patricia Webb Baldwin in 1997 in Destin, Fla. They relocated to Franklin, N.C. in 2001. He volunteered at and was later employed by the Macon County Sheriff's Department. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge 81 of Franklin. He was also a member of Holly Springs Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Webb Baldwin; three children, Susan Baldwin Yeosock and husband John, of Atlanta, Ga.; Patricia Ann Baldwin of Atlanta, Ga.; and Larry Grayson Baldwin Jr. of Destin, Fla.; three step-children, Eric L. Thrasher and wife Diane, of Oxford, Ala.; Lance K. Thrasher and wife Dawn, of Canton, Texas; and Tonya Thrasher Dupree and husband Timothy, of Oxford, Miss.; two brothers, Owen William Baldwin Jr. and David Aaron Baldwin both of Jackson, Miss.; one granddaughter, Addison Elizabeth Yeosock; seven step-grandchildren: Adam L. and Nathan E. Thrasher, Ariel N. Thrasher, Jackson and Carter Dupree, Emily Payne, and Tiffany Auer. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Saturday, April 12, 2008, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home in Franklin Revs. Eddie Trull and Lynn Dulakis officiated. Dorothy Mae Irby Dorothy Mae Irby, 77, of Lyle Downs Road, Franklin, N.C. passed away Sunday, April 13, 2008, at a local nursing home. She was born in Hines Co., Miss., the daughter of the late Willie H.M. and Lois P. Given Bates. She was an office worker for the Indiania State Highway Department and was a member of Cornerstone Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and Extension Homemakers. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Howard Eugene Irby; one daughter, Ms. Terry Turnvull of Cambridge, England; two sons, David A. Irby of Hammond, Ind., and Paul A. Hampton of Michigan; five sisters, Peggy Schichner of Lodie, Calif., Roseanne Dalton of Valencia, Calif., Sarah Jo Muller of Palms, Calif., Margott Griffin of Homer, La. and Dancia Brooks of Hendersonville, Tenn.; three granddaughters, Michelle Ann Hampton, Marcie Kaye Hampton and Taylor Nicole Irby. Dorothy V. Walden Dorothy V. (Dot) Walden, 84, of Franklin passed away April 13, 2008. Born in Congers, N.Y., she moved to Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. in 1955, residing there until 1997. A postal worker from 1964 until she retired in 1984, she became a house director for sororities and fraternities at Florida State University and University of Florida as a second career until retiring to Franklin in 1997. A member of the WAVES, she was an active member of the American Legion for 62 years, and a member of Post #108. Her achievements with the legion include currently being second vice and chaplain of Post #108, past state Sergeant of Arms, Department of North Carolina, and past president of American Legion Post #108 Auxiliary and the VFW Auxiliary. She volunteered for many other organizations including the First United Methodist Church of Franklin, Angel Thrift Shop, and Macon County CareNet. Survived by children Patricia Hall, Tampa, Fla.; Thomas Walden, Tallahassee, Fla.; Jack Walden, Wilmington, Del.; sister and brother-in-law Evelyn and Gerard Augustine, Vero Beach, Fla.; and four grandchildren. Lester A. Eastland Jr. Lester A. Eastland Jr., 78, of Franklin passed away Monday, April 7, 2008. A native of Oak Park Ill., he was the son of the late Lester Albin Eastland Sr. and Adelle Filler Eastland. He was a U.S. Army Veteran. He retired from Pelican Plastic as plant manager. He was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Audrey Eastland; two step-daughters Marcia Schirdewahn of Downer Grove, Ill. and Sandra Thurmon of Jessup, Ga.; five step-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren. Alney H. Owens Alney H. Owens, 88, of Walking Stick Road, Clayton, Ga., went to his heavenly reward Wednesday, April 9, 2008. He had been in declining health for about a year and half. He was a native of Macon County, N.C., and one of eight children of the late Thomas Riley and Rose Lee Owens. He was married to Ruth C. Owens, who passed away Aug. 9, 1991. He worked as a laborer all his life. He served in the CC Camps during the 1930s and worked from Georgia to California. He worked in construction and yard work until his 60s, then for the Forest Service until he was 85. He said, “I got so old I couldn’t work hard, and I didn’t want to steal their money.” He attended Blue Valley Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a son, Julius, who passed away April 13, 1987. He is survived by one daughter, Alma Owens, of the home, and one son, Ellis Owens, and his wife, Justine of Arlington, Va.; one sister, Ora Sue Watson of Hildebran, N.C.; four grandchildren, Thomas, Clint, Kelli and Elizabeth; four greatgrandchildren, Nora, Christopher, Dallas and Gage. Funeral services were held Saturday, April 12, in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home in Highlands, with Rev. Oliver Rice and Rev. Walter Wilson officiating. Euel Bertha Penland Euel Bertha Penland, 89, of Hayesville passed away Tuesday, April 8, 2008.Born in Towns County, Ga. She was the daughter of the late John Burton Penland and Mary Jane Johnson Penland. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Von Penland, two sisters, Ethel Sims and Irene Kimsey Phillips and three nephews, Harold and Floyd Kimsey and Ralph Phillips. She received her Masters degree from the University of Georgia and retired as a school librarian in Forsyth County. She was also a member of Ledford’s Chapel United Methodist Church in Hayesville. She is survived by one brother, Wayne Penland of Franklin, one sister, Ruby Corpening of Hayesville, 10 nephews, three nieces, 12 great nieces, 15 great nephews, 20 great-great nephews, 17 great-great nieces and one great-great-great niece. Funeral service was held Saturday, April 12, in the Chapel of Macon Funeral Home. Rev. Jackie Sellers officiated. Burial was in the Mt. Zion Cemetery. Nephews served as pallbearers.
