FHS tennis team ‘playing well’ so far this season Print

Franklin High School Panther tennis team played TC Roberson Tuesday, Sept. 2.

Coach Rick Blanton said that overall, Franklin played extremely well. The team won 21 total games at TC, but won 37 games playing at home. The team has become much more aggressive and is better at attacking the ball.

Natalie Best and Taylor Boss played their best match of the season by keeping the ball in play and playing a tough defense, said Blanton.

Courtney Dryman and Jennifer Stanfield kept the fans on edge as they led their match the entire time, but saw TC make a strong move to tie the score at 8-8. Again, Franklin led the tie breaker from the beginning, but allowed the win to slip away at the end losing 8-10.

Singles:

— Andrea Bell defeated by Maya Blue Stauffer-MacDowell 1-6, 1-6

— Natalie Best defeated by Erin Williams 1-6, 1-6

— Taylor Boss defeated by Lauren Vaughn 2-6, 2-6

— Courtney Dryman defeated by Elle Klein 3-6, 4-6

— Maci LeQuire defeated by Shannon Melrose 1-6, 0-6

— Kaitlyn Sutton defeated by Sydney Hedberg 3-6, 1-6

Doubles:

— Andrea Bell and Kaitlyn Sutton defeated by Maya Blue Stauffer-MacDowell 1-8

— Natalie Best and Taylor Boss defeated Elle Klein and Shannon Melrose 8-6

— Courtney Dryman & Jennifer Stanfield defeated by Victoria Thompson & Marshall Frederick 8-9 (8-10 tie breaker)

In exhibition play, Franklin’s Savannah Herman lost 4-8 to Erin Roberts. Hanna Vogelgesang defeated TC’s Jessica Virtanna 8-2. Franklin’s Cori Sellers and Carmen Vinson defeated Miniah Song and Rachel Johnson 8-6

Franklin defeats North Buncombe 9-0

As always, North Buncombe matched up well against the Franklin squad. Two matches were won by tie breaker with Natalie Best playing three hours before winning her singles match. Maci LeQuire and Kaitlyn Sutton trailed in the first set, but both rallied to win by a comfortable margin in the second set. Andrea Bell, Taylor Boss and Courtney Dryman had no problems winning their matches.

— Natalie Best defeated Emily Litton, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (10-6 tie breaker)

— Taylor Boss defeated Megan Cox, 6-2, 6-1

— Maci LeQuire defeated Julia Lindholm, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (10-6 tie breaker)

— Kaitlyn Sutton defeated Ilex Mcleod, 6-4, 6-2

Doubles:

— Andrea Bell and Kaitlin Sutton defeated Megan Cox and Mary Catherine Rubisch, 8-0

— Taylor Boss and Maci LeQuire defeated Lauren Propst and Caitlin Kelley, 8-5

— Courtney Dryman and Jennifer Stanfield defeated Julia Lindholm and Allison Quinn, 8-0

Exhibition Play:

— Cori Sellers and Carmen Vinson defeated their opponents, 8-0

— Olivia Boss and Savannah Herman defeated their opponents, 8-4

Match with Asheville, Franklin 3, Asheville 6

Coach Rick Blanton said the Franklin team played “very well” against Asheville. The team was one tie breaker away from being 4-5. This was closest the Panthers have been in eight years. Franklin struggled somewhat last year with doubles, but is much improved in that category this season, said Blanton. The doubles teams have grabbed two wins from Asheville and one from TC Roberson recently.

— Natalie Best was defeated by Taylor Haynes, 5-7, 3-6

— Taylor Boss was defeated by Taylor Theodossion, 1-6, 0-6

— Courtney Dryman was defeated by Libba McKinsey, 2-6, 5-7

— Maci LeQuire was defeated by Alex Baumgarten, 5-7, 6- 4, 6-7 ( 8-10 tie breaker)

— Kaitlyn Sutton defeated Millie Thomas, 6-2, 6-4

Doubles

— Andrea Bell and Natalie Best was defeated by MacKenzie Lasure and Taylor Theodossion, 1-8

Franklin defeats Walhalla, 9-0

Coach Rick Blanton: “Walhalla was weaker than teams of recent years. This gave Franklin’s team members an opportunity to execute some new shots which they have been working on. Additionally, players which normally do not play in the doubles role were given an opportunity to gain valuable match experience in doubles action.”

Franklin tennis defeats Enka 9-0

Enka played competitive tennis the first set, but the Lady Panthers’ conditioning paid dividends as the team only allowed Enka to grab two games in second set singles and one game in doubles.

— Natalie Best defeated Megan Caldwell, 6-2, 6-1.
