Carlie Nichols with Roy Lowe’s QOV. During the week of Veterans Day, 30 members of the Smoky Mountain Chapter 994 of Vietnam Veterans of America were presented with Quilts of Valor in appreciation for their service to our country. The awards ceremony was held during their regular meeting at the Coon Club on Thursday, Nov. 12. Members of the Quilts of Valor bee of the Smoky Mountain Quilters Guild presented quilts they had made and then inscribed each recipient’s name on their quilt. It was an opportunity for local quilters to extend their thanks to these veterans who have sacrificed so much. Maddy Haugh presents Nat Henry's Quilt of Valor. Quilts of Valor is a national effort to honor America’s military. Its mission is to cover all those service members and veterans touched by war with wartime quilts called Quilts of Valor. This organization is not about politics, it is about people. Nationally more than 24,000 quilts have been awarded to war wounded and veterans. The Smoky Mountain Quilts of Valor bee has more than 60 participants who are members of the guild. The guild has sponsored this community service for the past two years. In addition to this presentation, quilts have been sent to the Wounded Warrior Battalions at Ft. Bragg and Camp Lejeune as well as several VA Medical Centers.
