A Franklin man was arrested last month after allegedly assaulting an eight-year-old boy and threatening to stab him.
On the evening of July 18, Sergeant A.C. Stahl, of the Macon County Sheriff’s Office, responded to a complaint of an assault on a child at 648 Jones Ridge Road.
According to 9-1-1 dispatch, the caller stated the assailant “has him by the throat and he just threw him down on the floor and is threatening to stab him.” Upon arrival, Stahl met the child's mother who made the call. A young boy was with her.
The mother reportedly told Stahl that the attacker, her 34-year-old boyfriend John Michael Brostrom, was still somewhere in the house. She said that Brostrom “just went off” and that he had a drinking problem, although he only had two tall beers on that evening.
After searching the residence, Stahl found Brostrom in the bathroom, where he was then handcuffed and taken to the Macon County Detention Center, with the assistance of officers Mike Langley and Adam Crawford.
The victim, is not the biological son of Brostrom. According to reports, the victim went to check on his infant brother who was crying in the kitchen and when he went to inform his mother, Brostrom allegedly grabbed the boy by his throat “and drug him from the living room area to the kitchen.”
After being released, the victim ran to escape Brostrom, who caught him again downstairs where he brought him back to the kitchen— throwing him on the floor. At this time, the attacker had allegedly been holding the infant in his arms.
“[The mother] stated that when John grabbed [the victim] by the neck he said ‘he was tired of him tattling on him,’” said Stahl’s report, which indicated photographic evidence gathered identifying red scratches on the victim’s neck, redness on the neck and cheeks and a red mark on the upper center portion of his back.
The Department of Social Services was dispatched to the address where an agent assessed the situation with the family.
The mother showed officers cell phone images from July 12, indicating redness and raised marks on the victim’s back where Brostrom had reportedly hit him with a flyswatter.
Brostrom was charged with one count of assault by strangulation, child abuse inflicting serious injury and misdemeanor child abuse. A secured bond of $10,000 was set.
A.C. Stahl made the arrest with Jonathan Phillips, Mike Langley and Adam Crawford assisting. The case is under further investigation.
